Russia has plans for a new military base

The agreement provides for the construction of a “logistics and support center” in Sudan, where “repairs, resupply and rest of the crew can be carried out.”

The base would have a maximum of 300 military and civilians and could carry up to four ships, including nuclear ships.

The base is planned to be built near the city of Port Sudan. Russia, under the agreement, would also have the right to transport “weapons, ammunition and equipment” supposedly needed by this military base through Sudanese ports and airports.

The agreement on the operation of the military base will be valid for up to 25 years, unless one of the parties objects to its extension.

It is not yet clear when this bilateral agreement is due to be signed.

In recent years, Moscow has turned to Africa, trying to increase its geopolitical influence there.

Russia has supported Sudan with joint military and civilian projects, and in May last year signed a military cooperation agreement that will last for seven years.

In January last year, Russia acknowledged that in the wake of the political crisis in Sudan, Moscow’s “military instructors” had been in Sudan for some time, supporting forces loyal to the government.

2017 former Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, who was ousted in 2019, asked Vladimir Putin to “protect” his country from the United States. Mr. al-Bashir argued at the time that military cooperation between Sudan and Russia should be strengthened.
