Russia and Belarus are negotiating the diversion of oil flows from the port of Klaipeda

Prime ministers of Russia and Belarus discussed the possibility of diverting oil flows from Lithuania to Russian ports, for example to Ust Luga, said Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak, who participated in the talks.

As Novak told reporters in Minsk, both sides will now broach the issue.

Belarusian leader Aliaksandr Lukashenko, who faced pressure from the opposition after the disputed presidential elections, threatened last week to divert Belarusian cargo traffic from the Baltic states, which imposed sanctions on Minsk, to Russian ports.

Most of the cargo transported by sea from Belarus is handled in the port of Klaipeda. Lukashenko said he hoped to reach an agreement with Russia on transshipment tariffs for Belarusian goods.

The Lithuanian government emphasizes that diverting the cargo from Lithuania would mainly harm Belarus economically.
