The 16th season of the Regional Basketball League (TOPsport-RKL) has never been without future basketball stars. In Lithuania’s third division, Jonas Valančiūnas, Lukas Lekavičius, Artūras Gudaitis, Marius Grigonis, Rokas Jokubaitis and other high-level basketball players started their way to the great Olympus of basketball.

2020-2021 Hundreds of promising Lithuanian talents are trying to follow in the footsteps of the mentioned players. The list of this season’s most promising RKL players, who may soon rise to the next level, was based on feedback from coaches, basketball journalists, personal and team achievements and the men’s basketball perspective. The top ten include basketball players born in 2001 and earlier.

“There is always that workhorse that shoots and surprises through character and stubbornness. We are not chasing the result to be at the top of the ranking, – said Alfredas Kaniava, director of the Vladas Knašius basketball school. – Of course, our goal is to win every game, which gives the whole team and our organization confidence. But at the same time, we understand that if we go to high places, we will pay more attention to the players who can already deliver results. This would put the search for talented children in the background, who could become high-level players. In that case, we would suffer twice. Our greatest victory is to create the conditions to improve and, when the time comes, to help cross the bridge that leads to a higher level ”.

“I have always said that everything must be tested on the field,” said Vilnius Rytas-MRU-VKM coach Gintautas Regina. – There is a term – “photo players”. In photos they look neatly older, good data. I tell my players that you are already a very good team in the image, but still very weak on the field. There will be nothing without work. I’m not a huge fan of dozens of similar ones. On the other hand, for someone who does not get into this, it is an even greater motivation to try to show that something went wrong and they did not notice. It is not worth it that the players named at that time turn their noses, because in that case someone else will take their place very soon.

“Some of the born basketball players are already playing at LKL or even at a higher level, said Vytautas University coach Magnus Arūnas Juknevičius. – But there are many players of late or especially late maturity.

It also happens that the next time the content of natural gifts basketball players get stuck and go nowhere, and the strong character content of young people reaches their own. As a general rule, talls mature and develop at the latest. You also have to bear in mind that when first-year students come to study in another city, the first year becomes a challenge: they have to adapt to a new environment and a new rhythm ”.
