“Risen from the dead”: the revived man’s heart stopped for 45 minutes, but doctors don’t call it a miracle

Michael Knapinski, 45, was on a life support team when he was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Washington, last week. Doctors were also able to “resuscitate” the man’s heart.

“He came back from the dead. However, it wasn’t a miracle, it was a science, “Dr. Jenelle Badulak, a doctor in the intensive care unit at Harbourview Medical Center, told CNN.

Washington resident M. Knapinski marched into the national park last week and got lost in extremely cold temperatures. The Navy crew found him without any sign of life, CNN affiliate WPVI-TV reported.

“Michael was unconscious, severely hypothermic, and his heart stopped shortly after he was taken to the reception,” Jenelle Badulak told CNN. “But he hadn’t suffered any major injuries, so we started using a short-term circulatory support system to help keep his heart working.”

The team of doctors quickly decided that he would be the perfect patient for a life support device known as EKMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygen Saturation). This specialized device draws blood from the human body, which is then returned after oxygenation and removal of carbon dioxide.

Such treatment does not guarantee recovery, but sometimes it can really save a life.

J. Badulak said the team chose this particular device because M. Knapinski’s organs were so cold from the low temperature that they could work with less oxygen. As a result, doctors had more time to revitalize the heart.

After 45 minutes, the EKMO machine helped saturate the blood with oxygen and improve its circulation throughout the body. The team then heated the man’s body to a temperature that allowed the heart to function and revived him with an electric shock.

“We knew that his heart would start beating again. The main concern was his brain and whether there was permanent damage to them before his heart stopped, “Badulak said.

Two days later, Michael Knapinski opened his eyes.

“When I woke up, I didn’t understand what happened. I am very grateful to everyone here at the hospital for not giving up. Only thanks to them, I am alive and breathing, ”said the man.

Michael Knapinski was released from the hospital eight days later. According to the doctor, you should make a full recovery.
