Residents evacuated from the building on Gabija Street, with the wall of the apartment building cracked, the SNB reported to the Department of Fire Protection and Rescue Monday night.
“A notification was received about Gabijos street. 30 cracks in the stairwell and some apartments. Our forces went to the place, confirmed the fact, sent construction experts to assess the state, people are evicted and evacuated for security reasons, ”said Saulius Žilinskas, representative of PAGD.
He said he still couldn’t say how many people had been evacuated.
“This is currently being done,” said S. Žilinskas.
Notification of the incident was received around 7 pm, the Civil Protection Division of the Vilnius City Municipality was also informed about it.
According to the local deputy mayor of the capital Valdas Benkunskas, according to BNS, according to preliminary data, about 100 people were evacuated from the apartment building.
“The residents left their homes disciplined. (…) Some people took care of themselves where they could spend the night. The municipality also provided the hotel to stay overnight,” he said.
Povilas Poderskis, director of the Vilnius municipality administration, later told BNS that the house has a total of 72 apartments, of which “between 100 and 200 inhabitants” have been evacuated. According to him, the exact number of evacuated residents is not yet known.
According to the deputy mayor, the apartment building was built in 2004, but “it has been known as problematic from earlier times.”
