Gintenis Dauparas, communication specialist of the transport advertising portal Autoplius.lt, warns that little more than 300 thousand automobile transactions. This is 22 percent. less than in 2019.

“During 2020, more than 200 thousand. cars already registered in the country, and more than 95 thousand cars were imported for permanent registration. used light vehicles. This was also influenced by the decline in the supply of used cars in Western European markets.

The results in the new car market are somewhat better. It was reduced by 17 percent during the year. “43.3 thousand cars were sold”, says G. Dauparas.

The car market expert mentions that in 2020 the Lithuanian car market was presented with many challenges. In spring, a shock caused by trade restrictions and uncertainty caused a sharp drop in transactions, which took a couple of months to recover. However, sales were boosted by a vehicle registration tax that took effect in July. People were in a rush to buy a car before it expired.

“At the end of last year, transactions fell again due to the quarantine and restricted movement between cities. It is true that the situation is not reminiscent of spring, both buyers and sellers are more optimistic about the future. It is likely that the release of quarantine measures is expected to have a spring effect: delayed transactions may occur, ”predicts G. Daupar.

The specialist points out that the average price of a used car rose to 6,000 euros in the last quarter. This means that residents paid 300 euros more for cars than in 2019. However, according to Daupar, although the average price has increased in all age groups of cars, most of the change is due to a decrease in the number of transactions for older cars and a relatively stable number for newer cars.

“Although a pollution tax was introduced, imports of diesel cars into the country increased by more than 2 percent. Some European countries may have given up on diesel cars, so this has led to an increase in their number in Lithuania. Also, compared to 2019, last year the age of cars driving in Lithuania was only 20 days.

The current registration rate does not seem to give the desired results and even becomes an obstacle to the natural renewal of the fleet when driving old cars while driving. The new government plans to amend the law. Probably moving to annual fees. When this happens, owners of older cars can start selling them. This should reduce your demand and price. For those who want to sell or liquidate, it is better to do it before the change. Consequently, the demand for newer and less polluting substances should grow ”, pointed out the specialist.

The most popular cars

According to the specialist, the most popular age group of cars imported to Lithuania for permanent registration remained between 11 and 15 years. 2020 in the last quarter of all imported used vehicles, this age group accounted for more than 41 percent. cars. This is 3.5 percent. less than in the same period of 2019. In addition, the proportion of cars from 1 to 5 years grew: in the last quarter of the year there were almost 18% of them.

Volkswagen It is still Lithuania’s favorite used car brand. During the last quarter of 2020, more than 5,000 of these cars were sold. units. It is true that due to the pandemic, 37 percent of them were sold. less than the same in 2019. quarter. For the first time, TOP5 also entered Mercedes Benz. At once BMW car demand was exceptionally stable and was not affected by the market slowdown caused by the pandemic.

Apart from makes, most of which have been re-exported and are being re-exported, most of the new cars sold in the last quarter of 2020 Toyota – almost 900 pcs. This Japanese automaker in Lithuania managed to keep 196 units. car advantage over the rest in second place Volkswagen brand. In third place was To damage with 596 new models registered in the last quarter of last year ”, said G. Daupar.
