Regarding the Klaipėda Stock Exchange Bridge: a proposal to build a new one

The capital repairs of the Klaipėda Stock Exchange Bridge were last carried out in 2007.

However, the condition of the historic bridge is again worrying: the mechanisms of the bridge are worn, its noise annoys the residents of the old town.

The city authorities had previously decided to reduce the speed in the old town to 20 kilometers per hour. However, it is agreed that such a measure is not sufficient.

On Thursday, the Klaipeda City Committee on Economy and Environment discussed the fate of the bridge.

Council member Arūnas Tuma sent a letter requesting that the bridge be repaired immediately.

INHUS Engineering, after an examination of the bridge, indicated that the speed of vehicles traveling over the bridge should be limited.

According to Irena Šakalienė, head of the City’s Municipal Management Department, it is planned to allocate 15 thousand. euros for the preparation of the bridge repair project.

“It just came to our knowledge then. The completed project will show whether it will be a regular repair or a major overhaul. Almost ten years ago a feasibility study was carried out which showed that this bridge should be designed for pedestrians and automobiles,” explained I .Šakalienė.

Committee members agreed that the abandonment of the Bastion Bridge idea made it difficult to plan how to divert public transport. According to I.Šakalienė, this is a question of political self-determination, because it is obvious that now it would be difficult to divert the buses from Tiltų Street.

The committee also praised the bold proposals to rebuild this bridge, claiming that the current one requires too much investment.

The idea of the Bastion Bridge has been actively raised in Klaipeda for several years. This bridge across the Dane would have led from Bangu Street to Ship Crossing. However, neighbors were also opposed to this idea.

After nearly five years of design, it was announced in November last year that the contract had been terminated, although it was recognized that the city needed such a bridge. The idea of a bastion bridge has already cost the city about 600,000. euros.

The Klaipeda Stock Exchange Bridge was built in 1879. It was designed by a company from Gdańsk. In 1904, when trams began to circulate through the city, the bridge was rebuilt.
