Martin Schiller students at home 81:88 (26:18, 14:20, 23:26, 18:24) landed at Maccabi in Tel Aviv (12-17) and suffered a fourth consecutive failure.
The winner of the duel was announced at the end of the match. Paulius Jankūnas noticed the penalties, Hayes and Augustine Rubitas added a double point and after playing a successful stretch, Žalgiris gained a 7-point lead (79:72).
However, the hosts did not enjoy such an advantage for a long time. Ante Žižičius corrected an inaccurate shot, Scottie Wilbekin scored a three-point shot and the guests who scored 5 points in 30 seconds returned to the match – 77:79.
Another attack from Žalgiris got stuck, Chris Jones scored both penalties and played 2 minutes early. 33 sec. the score was the same (79:79).
Following this episode, Rokas Jokubaitis scored points from under the basket, but Elijah Bryant responded with three points, and Žižičius charged from above and Maccabi led 84:81 in the final minute.
Schiller called for a minute of rest, but Žalgiris’s attack ended in an error by Thomas Walkup. On the other side of the field, Wilbekin scored two points and secured the victory for Maccabi – 86:81.
Hayes scored 24 points (5/6 doubles, 3/5 trit., 5/6 penalties), 5 rebounds and 3 interceptions, 5 provoked fouls and 30 utility points in 32 minutes tonight.
For the American, it was the most productive and rewarding game of his career.
The beginning of the mourning did not promise anything bad for the residents of Kaunas. Hayes had scored 12 points in the first quarter alone, and after the points of the American and Lukas Lekavičius, “Žalgiris” had a double-digit lead in the first half (23:10).
However, Omri Casspi revived Maccabi’s attack from the bench, the visitors ran 18: 5 and there was nothing left of Žalgiris’ lead: the result was even (28:28). From that moment on, both teams played practically point by point until the end of the duel.
The winners were Chris Jones, who scored 13 points (5/6 dvit., 0/2 trit., 3/3 penalties) in 24 minutes, made 6 assists, served 4 and bounced 3 balls, caused 4 fouls, made a error 4 times and scored 21 utility points.
