During the review, plans are underway to renovate underground communications, pavement, sidewalks, install a bike path, and separate recreation areas. According to the representative of the municipal administration of the city of Kaunas, Arnoldas Bukelis, due to the large scale of the works, the street will remain in sections, and the complete completion of the works is scheduled for next year.
ELTA has announced that the quarantine, which disrupted the normal rhythm of life for many, has given travelers more freedom and space to manage the city’s streets. This is also used successfully in Kaunas.
“During the last months, the works in Kaunas have not stopped at all and continue at full capacity: the worn out engineering networks are being renewed, the streets, the sidewalks are being maintained, bicycle routes are installed and the roads are paved. This is basic and simply mandatory urban hygiene. At the same time, major projects are moving, which are becoming a solid foundation for Kaunas’ even stronger growth, “said Visvaldas Matijošaitis, mayor of the Kaunas City Municipality.
According to Aloyzas Pakalniškis, head of the City Administration Department of the municipal administration, although quarantine restrictions caused some inconvenience for many people, the significantly reduced traffic flows allowed street administration works to be carried out more quickly and safe.
“For example, when A. Baranauskas street was repaired, it was considered that it stopped traffic completely, but due to the decrease in car traffic, the works could have been carried out without closing the street. At that time, we finished repairing some smaller streets faster than we had planned, ”said A. Pakalniškis.
The reform of 11 March Street began with the renovation of the sidewalks and underground networks between V. Krėvė and Taikos Avenue. It is planned to complete the repair of the roadway, the pedestrian paths and the installation of the bicycle lane in this section in the fall. The red bicycle route will run from the Savanorių section to Taikos Avenue on the right hand side, and a common bicycle and pedestrian route will continue to be installed.
“The street is long, and at different times, in different places, the work is done by several contractors. Currently the roadsides are maintained and the underground communications are being updated in parallel. Later, there will be a turn for the section between Savanorių avenue and Partizanų street, ”said A. Pakalniškis.
According to him, it is planned to pay special attention to the renovation of the pavement in all the intersections of Kovo 11th Street: Therefore, we will strengthen these places, we will install quality foundations so that the coating lasts as long as possible ”.
To ensure traffic safety and driver comfort, parking lots on the 2.8 km long street will be rebuilt and longitudinal parking will be installed, the municipality report said.
