“I think the presentation should take place unequivocally in the spring session and we will continue to analyze the processes. I would very much like (association – aut.p.) to be adopted next year “, Delphi said TV Raskevičius.
Regarding jurisprudence, the parliamentarian recalled that the European Court of Human Rights has ruled against other countries that ask for the settlement of relations between people of the same sex.
“Those decisions are also valid for the Republic of Lithuania, but our Constitutional Court in 2019. In January, it gave a hint that it was necessary to regulate those relations,” said the member of the Freedom Group.
When asked if it was realistic to expect the Seimas to take that step next year and for the association to be legalized, TV Raskevičius said that the agreement concluded by this ruling coalition included socially sensitive issues.
“Some of the main coalition partners have made some informal promises about the specific number of votes they can get. In looking and evaluating the possibilities, we understand that this bill should also be sought to gain support among the opposition factions. “We will definitely take it and start it, but the coalition partners will have to fulfill their commitment to contribute to that decision to the extent that they believe they can,” said the MP.
According to him, issues of value are important to the coherent work of the coalition.
“Of course, there is no need to speak of ultimatums, but there must be consensus in the coalition on the ideas of the Freedom Party …, at least for the most part, on the need to address these issues and put them in the political agenda, “he said.
Recognize that anxiety exists
However, TV Raskevičius did not hide that there were concerns about the adoption of said law, which had been dusting the Seimas drawers for several years.
“I am very concerned because I got into politics precisely because of these priorities, they were the most important to me. This issue is not only important, there are a number of issues that have been overshadowed by the lack of political will to get into the drawers, ”emphasized the member of Seimas.
According to him, the current actions of the opposition and the strength of the majority are worrying precisely because of the legalization of same-sex couples.
“I am concerned that we will be able to muster the majority necessary to implement these issues. As a politician myself, I have set myself the goal of gaining support: personal hard work, speaking with other colleagues and a personal example, but if it fails, several options will need to be considered to ensure that these issues are not left on the political margins again. For the moment, thinking about various scenarios, we have those alternatives, “said TV Raskevičius.
When asked to assess whether it is realistic to expect not only legalization of the couple, but also the possibility of same-sex marriage, TV Raskevičius stated that the first step should focus first.
“I believe that the association is the first step that is very important to take. That would be very important, it seems to me that the day after the association law comes into force, this country will wake up a little differently. People would see that something had happened, but nothing had really changed in life, only a certain group of society had become legally safer and happier ”, emphasized the parliamentarian.
It is true that he said that perhaps it could be expected that after several Seimas terms, the issue of same-sex marriages will also be raised on the political agenda.
“Everything is based on a pragmatic calculation: an amendment to the Constitution requires a majority of 94 members of the Seimas. Looking at the Seimas today, I really do not see such a majority. When it comes to the votes for the association, I think that today we can speak 60 to 70 votes in favor, but it is still a “marginal” decision, we will have to work very hard to secure those votes. I think that in the next political cycle, but not in another political cycle, such a political majority could be formed, that I could discuss the need for a possible amendment to the Constitution, ”said TV Raskevičius.
A member of the Freedom Group also drew attention to the political opposition.
“We broke a lot of spears in Lithuania, discussing it: partnership, marriage, then we got involved in all kinds of meaningless value discussions about what a family is. I would like to multiply this common good in society as much as possible ”, added the member of Seimas.
