“I would say that today’s meeting is the beginning of dialogue. We discussed a number of human rights issues in a comprehensive manner. We pay close attention to the draft Association Law, which is currently being developed. During the meeting, it was agreed that it be I needed more dialogue and discussion on this issue in society.
It has been argued that the Law of Association is necessary not only for same-sex couples, but also for different-sex couples. For same-sex couples, this would be the only way to legally legalize their relationship, ”TV Raskevičius told reporters on Thursday.
He has not yet been able to specify how the bill will be improved, but he has no doubt that the bill will receive support in the fall.
The question of whether a new law is needed
Povilas Mačiulis, advisor to President Gitanas Nausėda, assured that it is important for the Presidency how to regulate coexistence by law.
“The president has always taken the position that this adjustment is necessary, it is not only necessary for the same couples, it is necessary for a much larger part of society. How to do it, whether in the form of new laws or within the framework of the Civil Code, is already a discussion of form.
The President has expressed the opinion that, in his opinion, the amendments to the Civil Code could be a fairer path. But everything should be left for discussion, “P. Mačiulis told reporters after the meeting.
Criticism of Nausėda
The portal tv3.lt recalls that the Association Law initiated by the rulers in the spring collapsed in the first step: the votes of the Seimas members were missing in the presentation stage. However, the authorities intend to return the improved project to the Seimas in the fall session.
The association bill proposed to legalize the union between men and women and people of the same sex, defining it as an officially registered fact of coexistence of two people in order to establish, develop and protect the relationship between the partners.
The president has recently received criticism from liberal political forces and the public for his stance on the LGBTQ community, a decision not to support several EU letters criticizing Hungary for a law unfavorable to the LGBTQ community.
