Last week a large amount of snow fell across much of Lithuania. Vilnius also fell asleep. This time, however, it was not the road users who cleaned the streets and highways who received the most criticism, but those who must take care of pedestrian traffic.
Warn to take into account the contest
“We are going to count the chickens in the snow. Yes, in short, the streets have been attended to promptly, the sidewalks remain a weak point. And now more.
The snow was extremely sudden and heavy. We see that one of the companies, “Stebulė”, is run really well, and “Grinda” has been praised and recognized by Vilnius residents for its good and timely cleaning of the main streets. However, in some cases, the inability of our contractors to properly clean the sidewalks is not justified, ”the mayor wrote on Facebook Tuesday night.
According to him, the city does not intend to pay for what has not been done: “We will not pay hard-earned money from taxpayers for work not done. We already calculated 140 thousand for January. EUR fines. Long-term contracts with existing contractors are coming to an end. We will announce a large-scale city cleanup tender soon. The experience and capacity of the companies will also be taken into account. “
According to the mayor, where the pedestrian infrastructure of the city has been redesigned, according to the standards that began to be implemented a few years ago, things are much smoother because the snow is mechanically cleared.

Bad where narrow and uncomfortable
“In the streets of the Old Town, in the streets of Soviet urbanism, where there is no space for pedestrians or posts sprout in the middle of the sidewalks, the equipment does not arrive, you have to clean by hand, and there is no snow, so cleaning is very complicated and the problems are obvious. This is an even greater incentive to reorganize the city infrastructure faster, “said R. Šimašius.
We will announce a large-scale city cleanup tender soon. Snowboarding experience and entrepreneurship will also be taken into account.
The problems arose at the crossroads of trails and streets, according to the mayor, there should be an end to the hustle of who is responsible for what and the translation of the snow for the neighbors. Also at public transport stops, especially in case of intensive use, they must be cleaned faster.
The mayor also mentioned the inner streets of the neighborhoods and patios, although they are not formally considered streets that need to be cleaned faster to avoid interruptions in garbage collection.
The mayor did not forget to thank not only the employees of the municipality and its companies who worked long hours in such extreme moments, the managers of Grinda and Stebulė, but also the people of Vilnius who grabbed their shovels and dug up their immediate surroundings. especially those who helped their neighbors.
“Another cold test awaits us, but we can also rejoice: the government has allowed ski entertainment, so Liepkalnis is expecting visitors, forests and hills in Vilnius as well.” Let’s take advantage, because spring is no longer behind the mountains ”, suggested R.Šimašius at the end of winter.
