The family of a police officer who was shot in the Mažeikiai district will receive compensation for the eight-year average salary, and more money will be raised to support the family, says Commissioner-General of Police Renatas Požėla.
“In accordance with the procedure established by law, the victim’s family will receive an average salary of almost eight years. Here is our initiative to announce such a public contribution rate,” R. Požėla told LRT television on Monday.
According to him, in addition to the compensation provided by law and the initiative to raise funds in society, the police themselves will allocate money to the family of the official from their own fund, to which the officials donate money “in good faith”.
The commissioner general had already confirmed Monday that the dead officer, cynologist Saulius Žymantas, had a safety vest in the car, but did not wear it during the fateful event. According to R. Požėla, S. Žymantas knew Stasys Brasas, who shot him dead.
The commissioner says questions about the vest should be answered by official and pre-trial investigations, which have not yet been completed, but questioned whether this safeguard would have saved the official’s life.
“Probably, members of the hunting community could say that these vests, which are mandatory to wear according to the procedure established by the Commissioner General, are designed to protect more of the knife, perhaps from other damaging elements. However, if it was shot by a Mosin gun, it is unlikely that this vest would have protected our officer, ”said the police chief.
Mr. Požėla also confirmed that the response to the incident was to strengthen the control system, where officials responsible for peer review “would have to visually verify that the officer has this security feature.”
On Friday morning, S. Brasas, suspected of domestic violence, was fired against S. Žymantas and his partner. A police officer died on the spot and his partner was injured.
The man, who shot the officer deadly, threatened to kill his spouse, police said Thursday, but officers did not find him. After going to check on Friday morning, the man greeted the officers with gunshots.
According to the Police Department, the house was burned down after shooting officers.
After the fire was extinguished, a burned body and weapon were found in the home, and investigations revealed that S. Brasas, who had shot officers, had been burned in the home.
According to the police, S. Žymantas was an experienced investigator, one of the best cynologists in Lithuania.
