Changes to the public transport schedules of the city of Kaunas are expected from Monday. The doubling of passenger traffic during the quarantine period made it necessary to review and reschedule bus and trolleybus schedules accordingly. During off-peak hours, public transport will be less frequent, but during peak hours, traffic in the city will have to circulate at an optimal pace.
A drastic drop in passengers
As the coronavirus situation in the country worsened, the number of Kaunas residents traveling by public transport dropped significantly. As of October last year, residents drove around 160,000 buses and trolleybuses a day. times this year in the same period the number of day trips reaches only 80 thousand.
“We carried out a passenger flow survey and we noticed that during the day and at night from 6 pm most buses and trolleybuses operate irregularly, so in the event of a sharp drop in passenger flow, it would be just impractical to leave the same frequency. However, even during this difficult period, those who use public transport on a daily basis need not worry: some trips will even be more frequent during peak hours, ”said Martynas Matusevičius, Head of the Department of Transport and Traffic Management of the Municipality of Kaunas .
It is noted that the significant decrease in the number of trips was determined by the restrictions on the activities of educational institutions and the transition of the population to work remotely, from home. Similar reasons prevailed during the first quarantine period this year in the spring.
Changes – from Monday
Beginning November 23, the working hours of all bus and trolleybus routes will change from Monday to Friday. The rest schedules of buses on routes 3, 6A, 18, 23, 26, 29G, 35A, 37, 38, 40, 46, 54, 57G and 68 and on all trolleybus routes are also being modified.
“It is true that although transport trips are less frequent at night, trips for residents who go to companies that work in shifts, as before, will be fully guaranteed,” said M. Matusevičius.
Before using public transportation, Kaunas residents are encouraged to read the updated route schedule online.
When traveling by bus and trolleybus during this period, it is mandatory to follow all safety requirements and recommendations: wear protective masks correctly, keep a safe distance between other passengers, disinfect your hands.
