Yesterday, the city council approved a proposal to organize a competition for the selection of a public carrier for the transport of passengers in peripheral urban areas using low-capacity ecological buses. After its implementation, nine new routes are planned where public transport does not currently work, so the total indicator of accessibility to public transport in Vilnius will reach 92 percent.

“Buying green vehicles and developing public transport services in remote areas of Vilnius is an important and necessary step. We are revamping the capital’s public transport fleet and can already welcome impressive statistics: more than half of all public transport is new. I believe this will further encourage Vilnius residents to move around the city and choose public transport, which at the same time will help reduce congestion on the streets and improve the quality of life, ”said Danuta Narbut, deputy director of the Administration.

Nine new bus routes will be integrated into the city’s public transport system, which will reach the following residential areas: Kriaučiūnai, Platiniškės, Pilaitė, Rokantiškės, Kryžiokai gardens, Visorius, Didžioji Gulbinas, Mažajosi Gulbinus, Riovonusbinda, Pavilnia Gulbinus, Riovonisbinis, Pavilnia Gulbinus . The locations have been selected with the population of the area in mind and in order to promote a more sustainable movement around the city.

The new routes are planned to be served by buses of class M2 or M3 with a capacity of approximately 22 seats each. They will meet the highest environmental requirements and be as polluting as possible. The specific number of buses will be clear during the tender, but it is tentatively estimated that at least 22 new electric or gas buses will add to the public transport fleet.

“In this competition for new routes, we want to enter more residential areas further away from the city, garden communities, from which many people move to the center every day. We have estimated that with the introduction of buses on new routes, public transportation will be available for approximately 52,000 people. residents who currently do not have access to public transportation. In this way, we will improve the quality of your life and movement, and we will reduce the harmful impact of the transport sector on the environment ”, says Modesta Gusarovienė, Director of SĮ„ Įimoimo paslaugos ”.

In addition, after the start of public transport in the aforementioned territories, safe and convenient waiting stops, access to them, traffic organization, lighting and other infrastructure will be installed.

Passenger service for the new routes will be provided by the carrier selected in the tender. The tender is expected to be announced at the end of the year and any carrier that complies with the conditions and requirements of the tender may participate in it.

In Vilnius, more than 70% of the new buses are already available.

Currently, more than 370 new buses and trolleybuses are operating in Vilnius, including the first electric buses to operate in the central part of Vilnius. More than 75 percent. The buses in the capital are already new, their age is 1-3 years.

The renovation of the park also increases passenger satisfaction with public transportation. The latest survey of this year shows that Vilnius buses and trolleybuses and the entire organization of public transport work are rated above 8 out of 10. This is the highest score in the entire history of the surveys.

Vilnius presented a strategy for the renewal of public transport until 2030. The goal is to have at least 55 percent during the decade. all vehicles would generate electricity, with another 45% powered by alternative fuels.
