An owner of a Tesla Model 3 decided to check how his electric car copes with the cold. The test was conducted in Winnipeg, one of the coldest cities in North America. The temperature there often drops below -30 ° C. That is exactly what it did during the test.
Before starting the test, the Model 3 estimated that it could cover 371 km. This indicator is calculated based on environmental conditions and even the driver’s habits, but cannot include changing factors. That is, before the trip, the Model 3 does not know how fast the driver will drive, what the road surface will be, how many stops he will have to make.
However, already at the beginning of the trip, it was clear that the forecast of 371 km is very optimistic. This time, the Model 3 traveled a straight road at about 90 km / h. at medium speed. The temperature ranged between approximately -30 ° C and -29 ° C.
Two hours later, the Model 3 stopped at 3 percent. the remaining battery (and some reserve created by the electric car to avoid damage to the systems when charging the battery in the cold). In total, the car traveled 175.8 km in two hours. That is, he managed to cover less than half the planned distance before the trip.
Lithium-ion batteries don’t like cold. Also, tires perform worse at this temperature. Even the air is thicker when pressed by so much cold. Of course, more energy is also used for comfort systems to make the car driver feel comfortable.
In fact, the 175.8 km figure is quite good considering such a low temperature. Many people don’t go that far every day. However, this is not surprising: Norway is one of the biggest fans of Tesla cars.
