According to the center, the arrests occurred in Babruisk, Barysau, Brest, Grodno, Liachavičy, Lida, Magiliave and Minsk. Navapolacke, Pinsk, Polotsk, Pružany, Recyca, Valkavisk, Vitebsk and Žabinka. Some of the detainees have already been released from the militia.
Ivan Kubrakov, head of the General Board of the Interior Committee of the Minsk City Executive Committee, informed the Belarusian media about about 120 detainees in the capital and two injured officials.
The militia reportedly used incendiary grenades and tear gas to dispel the protesters, with media reporting that at least some protesters were injured by firing rubber bullets at OMON units.
Volha Cemodanava, spokesperson for the Belarusian Interior Ministry, confirmed that special measures had been used during the protests in Minsk.
“The police have used special measures to quell the illegal actions of the protesters,” Chemodanova said Sunday.
He said information about the victims in Minsk will be released on Monday.
For the third consecutive month, there have been massive protests in Belarus over the presidential elections on August 9, announced by Aliaksandr Lukashenko, who has ruled the country since 1994. The opposition and western democracies consider these elections to be rigged.
