On Thursday, the Klaipėda Regional Prosecutor’s Office announced that the investigation has not yet been completed, but transfer to court is approaching. The prosecution used a wide range of specialists, including scientists, to find out the crime and the extent of the damage. The damage caused to nature is not yet well identified, since the conclusions of the experts hired by the company do not coincide with the data of the investigation of the Prosecutor’s Office. However, it is estimated that the documents presented to the court will indicate an amount greater than one million euros. Previously, this amount was denominated around 5 million.
“Today is a symbolic day, a year since the investigation began. The prosecutor conducting the investigation has inspected 80,000 files, the investigation is not complete. The functions of the prosecutors were performed by specialists and scientists from various fields,” says Dalia Pocienė, Chief Prosecutor of the Klaipėda Regional Prosecutor’s Office.
“The damage has been calculated to date, but we cannot name it yet, because the company is still hiring experts who have indicated that no damage has been done to nature. We think different. We don’t want to reveal it now, because we believe the court should rule, ”says Gina Skersinskytky, the prosecutor overseeing the investigation.
The investigation was initiated both for environmental damage and for the falsification of a large number of documents.
When the case goes to court, the prosecutor says he cannot name it, because the volume of the case is large and suspects who are familiar with it have not yet filed applications. According to G. Skersinskytė, everything will depend on the position of the suspects.
The prosecutor reveals that the most severe charges against the suspects are up to 6 years in prison. The prosecution does not reveal who will be charged with the suspects. The investigation identified nine suspects, one of whom is a company. One of them is Gintautas Pangonis, the main shareholder of Grupo Grigeo. Tomas Eikintas, who recently started working for Grigeo Klaipėda, was also included on the list of suspects. The prosecution does not indicate whether they will be charged.
“The company has carried out an internal investigation into the damage to nature. They also identified two suspects in their internal investigation. I can’t tell if it’s okay or not. The study covers 8 years. In addition, it is necessary to find out what sewage can enter the environment, what composition, what impact on the environment. Of course, this is a very interesting study, but also a very difficult one. We hope that the court will evaluate all the material, ”says the prosecutor.
G. Skersinskytė says that Grigeo Klaipėda has become exceptional not only in the scope of his research, but also in his influence on society and other research on the damage done to nature. People have become much more active in fighting natural pollutants and some laws have changed as a result of this study.
Just before the Prosecutor’s Office published the latest data, Grigeo Klaipėda issued a message saying that the company “has assumed and will be responsible for its activities from the beginning, so TIG Environmental, international expert, study of experts and presented his conclusions. “
“The priority of the company is to know the impact on nature and restore the original state of the environment as soon as possible, that is why we have started a study by foreign experts. According to the calculations and conclusions of foreign experts, the area of the Curonian lagoon affected by the Grigeo Klaipėda sewage had to be limited, and the impact on fish and zooplankton had not been caused, ”T. Eikinas quotes in the report.
Delfi recalls that on the night of January 7 last year a search was carried out that was particularly significant for the investigation. Information soon spread in the public sphere that if a company guard working in Dumpiai had noticed the investigators, the illegally used sewer pipe would hardly have been detected.
The search was carried out at night by 25 policemen. “The task was formed only at the last minute, the officers were summoned, only then was the task announced. This is the nature and scale of this task. I think this is a very unusual event, a resonance that required law enforcement officers to protect nature, chemistry and other knowledge, ”Klaipėda County reported immediately after the search. Chief of Police Alfons Motuz.
The researchers say they can’t tell how many years of such contamination has been going on, just to name it, it actually happened in more than one day. According to investigators, the equipment was intentionally installed in such a way that part of the sewage treatment plants would bypass the sewage and, after entering the Klaipedos Vandenai pipes, would flow into the Curonian lagoon in Dumpiai.
