“The Seimas (…) calls on the European Union (EU) to adopt and implement as soon as possible the so-called EU Magnickis Law-type human rights sanctions mechanism, which would include a list of individual and sectoral sanctions against the regime. of the Russian Federation “. says the draft resolution.
In the draft document, the Seimas calls on Germany to abandon the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project and calls on the EU to seek to diversify energy sources and suppliers as much as possible.
“Exports of energy resources are the main source of financing for Russia’s aggressive foreign policy initiatives, mainly against the Baltic states and other Central and Eastern European countries,” the draft document said.
As noted in the draft resolution, the poisoning of Alexei Navaln reminds us once again of the need to stop the construction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline.
“The Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline under the Baltic Sea does not have an economic basis and is a geopolitical project that will increase Europe’s dependence on natural gas from the Russian Federation; (…) The gas supplied by the Russian Federation is used often as a tool for political and economic pressure on countries dependent on gas supplies, and the Nord Stream 2 pipeline could potentially be exploited for this purpose, a concern expressed by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE ) “The draft resolution says”.
Its authors emphasize the need to continue supporting dissidents, non-governmental and civil society organizations in the Russian Federation, as well as independent media and journalists.
The draft resolution also emphasizes that the situation of universally recognized democracy, human rights and freedoms in the Russian Federation remains critical.
The resolution is proposed for 2020. September 17 European Parliament resolution on the situation in Russia: the poisoning of Alexei Navaln.
The draft document was registered by Laurynas Kasčiūnas, Vice Chairman of the Seimas National Security and Defense Committee (NSGC), together with the members of the Seimas Aušrinas Armonaitis, Gabriel Landsbergis, Audronius Ažubalis, Gediminas Kirkilas, Žygimantas Pavilionis and Dovile Šakalienė.
