“So far, we have no data that the virus changes to cause more severe forms of the disease. It is likely that we will not explain to all infected people that the actual number is higher than what is published daily. If so, the greater Most of them are seriously ill and, unfortunately, die ”, said V. Usonis on the program“ Delfi diena ”.

In his opinion, there is a high probability that a new UK registered strain of the virus has already entered Lithuania.

“Until now, the virus can circulate in a very small circle of people and spread if we allow it. Today, the only measure is strict quarantine measures, ”said the professor.

Although vaccination of the population with the COVID-19 vaccine will begin in Lithuania at the end of this week, according to V. Usonis, we will not return to normal life soon.

“It takes 3 to 4 weeks for the vaccine to trigger an immune response, which means that the vaccine will now be safe within a month,” he said.

“To achieve public immunity, the number of people vaccinated must be high enough, 60-70%, when society can return to its normal life,” explained the professor.

According to V Usonis, the results of the vaccination will be available around the fall of next year: risk of infection by coronavirus.

By the end of this week, Lithuania should receive just under 10,000 of the first doses of the vaccine, which will be enough to vaccinate about 5,000 people. The vaccination of the population is scheduled to start from Sunday. Initially, medical personnel will be vaccinated.
