The Department of Prisons reports that the convicted Ričardas Suodaitis, who was released to go to Kaunas hospital to see an infectious disease specialist, did not return to the colony on Friday.
The convict was supposed to return at 5 pm, but did not return. They wanted it. However, R. Suodaitis himself returned to the prison on Saturday morning.
On Saturday, inmates Rainuold Zacharov, born in 1976, and Donatas Počas, born in 1980, did not return to the open colony of the Alytus Correctional Center: they were released to go shopping in Alytus.
Both, like most prisoners in open colonies, have been sentenced to less than a year in prison.
The search for prisoners who did not return was announced. The men were arrested the same day. Officers from the Criminal Intelligence and Security Management Division of the Prison Department found D. Poča in the Lazdijai district, and the police arrested R. Zakharov in Vilnius.
Pre-trial investigations have been initiated into these events.
The Department of Prisons notes that a turbulent weekend at the Alytus Correctional Center is not exceptional. Such abuses by convicts – not returning with permission to leave open colonies – are becoming rare.
Convicted persons with different dependencies often abuse the freedoms granted by law.
Prisoners serving sentences in open colonies have the right to visit medical institutions, businesses, and seek work independently and without protection. Recently, however, several convicts have abused this opportunity and do not return to the open colonies in time to request permission.
