Speaking about the history of egg painting, the food expert says that many cultures in Europe associate eggs with life, rebirth and spring; even before the birth of Christ, the egg was considered not only a symbol of the natural rebirth of spring, but also the beginning. of each life.

No one knows exactly when Christians took up the tradition of painting eggs, but this probably happened in the Middle Ages, at least around the 13th century. One of the earliest records of Easter eggs is from 1290, when King Edward I of England ordered 450 eggs to be colored and given to relatives. Eggs were relatively cheap at the time, which probably helped decorating traditions become more easily established among the less noble population of the country.

And while we closely associate egg painting with Easter, some historians argue that the tradition of painting with eggs or other decoration predates Christianity. Archaeologists have even found ostrich eggs in a cave in South Africa, carved in writing about 60,000 years ago. Colored eggs have long been a part of the Persian New Year celebration and are also associated with Egypt’s Sham Ennessim celebration, which marks the beginning of spring.

Juodkazienė, waxing or shaving of eggs has long been the most common in Lithuania and other Eastern European and Slavic countries: Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Poland and the Czech Republic. When printing with wax, the pointed match or the tip of the dowel is soaked in molten wax and various patterns are drawn on the egg. Then the egg is dipped in paint and a shiny pattern is obtained.

If the pattern is shaved, it is done on an already painted egg: the paint is removed from the eggshell with a knife or other sharp tool. Another popular way to extract various patterns in eggs is to glue herbs or flowers to the egg and soak it in paint. Natural patterns are then extracted from plant outlines.

It is true that people nowadays also print eggs with various glitters or specially designed stickers, use various threads, even shaving foam. Well, for those who want minimalism, the eggs can be painted without any patterns.

According to a food expert, painted eggs should not be hastily cleaned, let them dry naturally. Once the liquid has dried, the eggs will have a matte color, and if you want a shine, it is advisable to grease them with a cotton ball soaked in olive oil or with a soft cloth.
