In his welcoming speech, the President said that there were too many expressions of intimidation and contempt on both sides of the dispute.
“It just came to our attention then. Dissatisfaction pervades every home. Sensitive issues of human rights and community in society are hotly debated. It is very good that it is happening, bad, this is how it happens. Today, there is contempt and intimidation on both sides of the dispute and they are only increasing, ”said G. Nausėda.
“Let’s stop and look around, because there are no more barricades around. Why do we build barricades in our hearts and minds? That is not what the recent past has taught us, it is not what we should fight for. After all, we are still Lithuania on March 11, a country of strong, patient and responsible people, ”said the president.
He called March 11 the roots of Lithuania, in which we began to create a free life, and emphasized the progress made over more than three decades.
“Today, by measuring the path we have traveled together, we can better assess where we are and what awaits us. We used to dream of returning to the West; today we are part of a prosperous and democratic West,” said the president.
“We used to look for allies and guarantors of security; today we are building NATO’s own success. We used to feel like prisoners, today we decide our own destiny ”, he emphasized.
Lithuania marks the 31st anniversary of the restoration of independence on Thursday, but due to the epidemiological situation, some traditional official events have been abandoned.
