“The Belarusian authorities must allow Archbishop T. Kondrusiewicz to enter the country so that he can take care of his pastors during the ongoing protests. He and the entire Belarusian nation must be able to exercise their fundamental freedoms, including freedom of religion,” wrote the head of US diplomacy on Twitter.
For his part, Morgan Ortagus, head of the press service of the US State Department, also called on Twitter the ban on the metropolitan’s entry to Belarus as an “act of fear that undermines the ideals of freedom.”
Alexei Begun, head of the Department of Citizenship and Migration at the Belarusian Interior Ministry, told reporters on Tuesday that the agency explains why T. Kondrusiewicz was not allowed to enter the country.
August 31 Belarusian officials, without giving reasons, did not allow a hierarch of the Catholic Church, who is a Belarusian citizen, to enter the country. According to Begun, he hopes that this “misunderstanding will be rectified in the near future.”
Earlier, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said that the metropolitan in Poland had been “entrusted with certain tasks” and had not been allowed to enter the country.
