During the call, Pompeo demanded the release of the detained US citizen Vitaly Škliarov and allow him to leave Belarus immediately, confirmed a representative of the State Department. He also reiterated Washington’s support for the “democratic aspirations of the Belarusian people.”

The conversation was also reported in the Belarusian media.

Political adviser V. Shkliarov was first jailed and then placed under house arrest, the Belarusian opposition said this week.

Belarus has been plagued by constant demonstrations since the August 9 presidential elections, in which it has won victory over leader Lukashenko. However, according to the international community, the real winner of the elections is opposition leader Sviatlana Cichanouskaya.
