Pompeii is still full of mysteries: the man and his slave did not escape the terrible fate

The bones were found on the outskirts of this ancient Roman city when excavating a beautiful villa destroyed during an eruption in 79 years. In 2017, a stable was unearthed with the remains of three harnessed horses in the same area.

According to Pompeii officials, both men likely avoided the initial ash dump, but were killed in a powerful volcanic eruption the next day.

Plaster casts were made of both skeletons, a task made easier by the fact that traces of the victims’ figures were found in the hardened ashes.

Judging by the skull, one of the victims was a young man between the ages of 18 and 25, whose vertebral discs were compressed. This find led archaeologists to hypothesize that the young man was doing the physical work that slaves were doing at the time.

The second victim found next to him had strong bones, especially in the critic, and was likely a man in his 30s to 40s, Pompeii officials said.

Both skeletons were found in the hallway that leads to the stairs to the top floor of the villa.

Analyzing the traces left in the fabric in the ash layer, it was concluded that the young man was probably wearing a short pleated tunic, possibly made of wool. The older victim was not only wearing a robe, but he also appeared to be wearing a robe on his left shoulder.

Although excavations continue at this site near Naples, tourists are currently unable to visit the archaeological park due to the country’s measures to combat the COVID-19 epidemic.
