Explaining the source of contamination in the Curonian lagoon, 8 samples have already been examined in AB Klaipėdos vanduo’s laboratory, which were taken from different locations in surface sewage networks. According to the company, no petroleum products were found in the pollutants that exceed the permitted limits specified in the Surface Wastewater Treatment Regulation. In addition, the concentration of suspended solids, which indicates the presence of sediment in rainwater, was also found to be below permissible levels. The results of the studies that are expected to answer whether heavy metals and organic contamination have been found in the contaminants are still awaited.
After receiving the preliminary results of the investigation, it is concluded that sand, gravel and clay impurities may have entered the surface sewer networks. Employees of the network service of the Klaipėdos vanduo company continue to work to find a possible source of contamination. In addition, the pipes of the companies’ rainwater networks are inspected, which are connected to the centralized surface water network.

The Klaipėdos vanduo company reported that the rainwater is treated at the Varnėnų str. and Nemuno str. They are equipped with an oil trap and a sludge precipitator. Rainwater flows into the Curonian Lagoon only after it has been treated in sewage treatment plants. Construction work on the treatment plant is currently being completed. Towards Nemuno str. and Varnėnų st. Rainwater flows from 391 hectares from the central part of the city, that is, Šilut plazas square, Taikos avenue, Kauno street, Dubysos street, Agluonos street and other streets.
On Wednesday, the Department of Environmental Protection announced that it was investigating various versions of contamination, from the ship “Banga” to the construction works and the involvement of “Grigeo Klaipeda.”
Pollution is explained by environmentalists
The Notification Service of the Department of Environmental Protection received a notification about the contamination observed in the Curonian Lagoon on the Smiltynė ferry on Tuesday around 4 pm
Environmentalists immediately rushed to the scene. The Environmental Protection Agency laboratory was called and water samples were taken to determine contamination.
Currently, environmentalists together with Klaipeda water specialists are conducting a study. The surface wells of the rainwater networks are inspected and a possible source of contamination is searched.
An investigation into this event has been started and the damage to nature will be explained and calculated.
