“We warned the Latvian Maritime Rescue Coordination Center in Riga, which in turn is sending its ship to help on its own initiative,” Eugenijus Valikovas, head of the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center, told Delfi diena.

According to him, a helicopter will be sent again to clarify the location of the expansion of the place.

“The pollutants are collected, the preliminary size of the place is 4 km long and 100 meters wide. It is not even an accident, it is an oil spill incident. Their quantity is likely to be up to a ton, “said E. Valikov.

According to him, due to the cold, the spot expands slightly, but the accumulation of pollutants is hampered by the wind and waves.

“The assembly will take more than an hour,” said the head of the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center.

Environmentalists calculate the potential extent of damage from the incident and its impact on nature. The damage must be compensated by the terminal administrator.

The authorities received notification of the incident on Monday around 10 p.m.

The circumstances of the incident are investigated

According to the press release, Orlen Lietuva will announce that the crude oil spill has been stopped, the exact amount of spilled oil will be clear after the settlement of the accident.

“At the same time, despite the difficult weather conditions, intensive work is being done to minimize possible damage to the environment. After identifying the incident, Orlen Lietuva immediately informed the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Lithuania and the services Responsible nationals. Active cooperation is being established with national forces to eliminate the consequences of the accident as soon as possible, and decisions have been taken to protect the entire infrastructure from further negative effects on the environment. The situation in the Baltic Sea after this incident is fully under control.

Currently, Orlen Lietuva’s tugboats, emergency response team and company safety team are patrolling and monitoring the shoreline. The Baltic Sea coast from Šventoji to Liepaja was surveyed; no contamination was observed. ORLEN Lietuva AB’s Emergency Operations Center was urgently summoned and an incident investigation commission was formed. All possible measures will be taken to eliminate the accident as soon as possible and reduce any damage to nature. The circumstances of the incident are being investigated.

Orlen Lietuva’s activities will not be interrupted due to this accident. The refinery in Mazeikiai district has built up a reserve of crude oil, oil refining will proceed according to plan, ”the report reads.

According to BNS, Orlen Lietuva has been importing oil through the Būtingė terminal since 2006, when the Polish company Orlen acquired the then Mažeikių Nafta.

In 2001, there were up to two accidents at the Būtingė terminal, which has been in operation since 1998: when the underwater hose broke in November of that year, 59 tons of oil fell into the sea, of which 10 tons were collected, and environmental damage was estimated at 2.6 million. LTL. The prosecution filed a criminal case for marine pollution.

It was later announced that the hose manufacturer recommended changing them every three years, but this was not done.

In March 2001, the rope that held the ship to the buoy broke due to strong winds while pumping oil to the Norwegian tanker North Pacific at the terminal, and the oil transport hoses broke when the ship began to drift . During the incident, 3 tons of oil spilled into the sea, part of it reached the territorial waters of Latvia.

The first tanker hose disappeared in December 1999. So the oil did not spill into the sea.

Another incident at the Būtingė oil terminal also took place in January 2008, when the Stena Antarctica tanker was unloaded on the buoy. Around 400 kg of oil was reportedly thrown into the sea at that time, reaching the coast of Šventoji.
