“We will definitely strengthen our forces on New Year’s weekend and New Year’s night,” said A. Paulauskas on the “Delfi diena” program.
“Our officers will be in the center of practically all municipalities, in the squares where the Christmas trees are,” he said.
According to A. Paulauskas, there will be about 2,000 civil servants working in Lithuania on New Year’s Eve, they will see to it that people do not gather in public spaces.
“Most of the municipalities have heard a request to put out the Christmas trees, give up the festive fireworks and thus not attract people to the central squares.
If it is identified that the municipalities have not taken measures so that people do not gather in the squares, they try to attract people with fireworks, burning Christmas trees, music, etc., each case will be recorded and, like any event it is forbidden, we can explain ”, explained the Deputy Commissioner General of Police.
In that case, he said, administrative responsibility for violating quarantine conditions would apply.
According to A. Pausauskas, the police also limit vehicle access as close as possible to the central squares of the city and the Christmas trees.
“Residents should not be surprised if they simply cannot physically get close to the central parts of the city,” warned a police spokesman.
“The sobriety of the driver will also be monitored. We will definitely take a number of steps to encourage people to stay home,” he said.
Police are urging people to inform officials about possible gatherings at home as well.
“We will definitely respond to any messages about noise, music, maybe some kind of gathering at home. We’d even like to encourage people to see that guests gather in neighbors, there are a lot of cars and people don’t really live together, call at 112 and inform the police ”, said A. Paulauskas in the program“ Delfi diena ”.
