According to a nutritionist, even a person who eats healthy and exercises can suffer from hypersensitivity of the body to one product or another.
“There are various ailments that a person does not associate with eating food: indigestion, skin problems, being overweight, joints, migraines. Chronic allergies can cause not only unexplained pain, but also chronic fatigue or fluctuating body weight.
For example, an athlete who eats healthy products and counts calories may not achieve the desired result due to the inflammatory processes that occur in his body due to the consumption of products to which the body is hypersensitive ”, says R. Petreit.
Mixed concepts
The nutritionist says that people often confuse the concepts of food intolerance, allergy and hypersensitivity and use them as synonyms, but they are all very different.
The main difference between food intolerance and food allergy or hypersensitivity is the body’s reaction. According to the expert, intolerance is associated only with gastrointestinal symptoms.
“Food intolerance often does not have an immune response, but is associated with gastrointestinal symptoms caused by digestive problems associated with certain foods. It is strictly related only to enzyme deficiency. This would be intolerance to lactose, fructose, histamine and other substances ”, explains R. Petreit.
And here an allergy or hypersensitivity to food, according to a nutritionist, can bring many symptoms. Sometimes they are not even related to digestion.
“Both allergies and hypersensitivity are involved in the immune system. However, she reacts differently. The classic type I allergy is when the immune system produces specific IgE antibodies that cause sudden allergic reactions.
Symptoms appear within seconds or minutes: severe swelling, shortness of breath, a rash, itchy skin, or even anaphylactic shock.
Hypersensitivity (type III allergy) occurs when the immune system produces specific IgG antibodies. These antibodies can cause inflammatory processes in the body. Symptoms can be felt even after three days of consuming the wrong food, ”says the expert.
The reasons are various
When asked what depends on whether a person will be sensitive to one or another food, the nutritionist is open: there is no single reason.
“Food that passes through intestinal cells is properly digested and tolerated by the body’s immune system, unlike food that passes through intestinal spaces and is not processed by intestinal cells.
Drugs, infections, stress, dysbiosis, mycoses or parasites, improper diet, alcohol, heavy metals, and environmental toxins can damage the integrity of the intestinal wall and allow food components to penetrate in the intestinal tract, ”says Petreit.
He adds that when the immune system recognizes a food as foreign, it can elicit a response that causes unwanted symptoms.
Studies are mixed
Many private labs offer a variety of tests to help determine if you have a food hypersensitivity. The nutritionist encourages not to rush and to be interested in the method of execution, the manufacturer of the reagents and other parameters that may determine the quality of the test.
Currently, in Lithuania, it is possible to choose more than one private laboratory, which performs food hypersensitivity tests, also called “food intolerance” tests. It is true that the offer is really large, it is possible to study from the minimum to the maximum number of products, on which, of course, the price of the study will depend.
I would highlight the production of reagents, the methodology of action and the particularities of the evaluation of results, reference values, interlaboratory control, nutritional strategy provided / not provided. It is also very important to pay attention to the reagent manufacturer and to the international recognition and scientific validity of the test ”, the expert shares the advice.
