The United States Department of Defense said the aviation reached a checkpoint used by these groups on the Syrian-Iraqi border. According to the military, “several objects” were destroyed there.

The United States announced this raid for the first time since Biden’s term began five weeks ago.

“At the urging of President Biden, the US military had launched airstrikes tonight against infrastructure in eastern Syria used by Iranian-backed militant groups,” Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said in a statement.

“These attacks were authorized in response to recent attacks against US and coalition troops in Iraq and the continuing threat to those troops,” he said.

Kirby did not say whether people were killed in Thursday’s raids.

But the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a non-governmental organization, said 17 people had been killed in three trucks of ammunition from Iraq near the Syrian city of Abu Kamal.

According to SOHR, all of the victims were members of Hashed al Shaabi, a pro-Iraqi government. This organization unites a chain of smaller paramilitary groups with ties to Iran.

Kirby said the coup was directed against Iraqi Shiite armed groups Kataeb Hezbollah and Kataeb Sayyid al Shuhada, which belong to Hashed al Shaabi.
