The question has long been whether former Prime Minister S. Skvernelis will withdraw from the peasant faction of the Seimas. The main intrigue is how many passengers will be able to leave.
Those numbers in the backstage puzzles range from 7 to 8 to 12 or even more. That is why the fight between S. Skvernelis and R. Karbauskis is taking place now. One seeks to attract as many colleagues from the group as possible, and the other seeks to detain as many of them as possible.
R. Karbauskis is releasing public statements that those who have left must help the parliamentary mandates, and behind the scenes he explains to his colleagues that S. Skvernelis will definitely become a partner of the ruling conservatives and liberals.
The fight got louder and louder
Recently, R. Karbauskis and S. Skvernelis have been talking about divorce in a more open and public way.
The former prime minister began to speak about the sad future of the peasants and the difficulty of seeing each other in his carriage after R. Karbauskis’s deal with the old peasant Tom Tomilin, kicking him out of the party for supporting the dictators’ Societies Act.
Following the withdrawal of the peasant faction from the riots of August 10 with the withdrawal of one of S. Skvernelis’ comrades, Lin Savickas, the former prime minister no longer hid that he could follow suit.
Another wave of public outrage from S. Skvernelis was caused by the fact that R. Karbauskis held a secret meeting of his supporters at the Agroconcern headquarters under his leadership in Babtai.
There was a discussion about how to deal with political comrades who could knock on doors.
There were those who volunteered not to wait and were immediately fired, but the opinion was overwhelming that one should wait and perhaps even try to speak to the former prime minister.
It was even considered offering him a prominent place on the party’s European Parliament election list and appointing some of his former ministers as negotiators. After all, R. Karbauskis himself has not been communicating personally with S.Skvernelis for some time.
The main result of this secret meeting, however, was that S. Skvernel was even more offended. He also poured out his outrage by stating publicly that although he had not been invited, he knew what was being said at Babtu.
At that time, R. Karbauskis has been talking in recent days about the fact that S. Skvernelis is dissatisfied with something and probably cannot be reconciled with the fact that the peasants support the country’s leader, Gitan Nausėdas. According to R. Karbauskis, the former prime minister does not strictly support the president’s policy.
The peasant magician tries to show that he is not afraid of the faction falling apart. However, how real is R. Karbauskis’ peace?
Put the last points
According to Lietuvos Rytas, the departure of S. Skvernelis and his supporters from the Seimas peasants should be announced early next week, without waiting for the autumn session of parliament.
It is feared that the Family Movement rally that may take place near the Seimas on September 10 will overshadow the message of political divorce.
This week, S. Skvernelis maintained his meetings and encounters with the fans, placing the last points before the start.
Among the politicians who can join the Prime Minister are not only L. Savickas, former Chancellor of the Government Algirdas Stončaitis, but also T. Tomilinas, Rūta Miliūtė, as well as former non-partisan Social Democrat Laima Nagienė, former ministers Linas Kukuraitis and Kęstutis Mažeika.
Still together, but with bitten teeth
According to Lietuvos Rytas sources, K.Mažeika is already trampling on the faction gate, and this is supposed to be caused by the growing conflict with Dainius Gaižauskas, a member of the Seimas close to R. Karbauskis.
“There is smoke, but there is still no fire,” said the former environment minister when asked about his possible departure from the group.
The politician did not hide that there have been several conversations inside and outside the group recently, but there are still no solutions: “It will definitely not happen on September 10.”
But the peasant did not deny that some circumstances make him think about possible changes. “If any radical measure is taken, I will have to think something,” said the politician.
For some time, another wound has been bleeding among the peasants: K.Mažeika, who was elected a member of the Seimas in the southern district of Sūduva, disagrees with another influential member of the party, D.Gaižauskas. The latter accuses his colleague of losing in the single-member district of Marijampolė.
“Keep digging an ax and spreading all kinds of heresies. It is their problem, but it will be seen how others will see it, “the former Environment Minister reluctantly said about the internal conflict.
However, when asked how he could have contributed to D. Gaižauskas’s defeat at Marijampolė, K. Mažeika exploded: “It would be necessary to ask people why they were not so successful there.
Apparently, it is not so necessary to work with people that even members of the party run away from the department. He says he controls all of Marijampolė, and even the department is almost gone.
D.Gaižauskas accuses me that people are fleeing for me, that I am against him. But people themselves come to me to discuss what to do, because they don’t talk to them.
That’s the way it is. As far as I went, he worked similarly for the police.
It is unfortunate that this is the case, but if necessary, it will also be possible to have concrete examples of how ugly he treated some people. And so far we are working with bitten teeth ”.
Weekend – to reflect
However, perhaps the most important supporter of S. Skvernelis is probably the old peasant and one of the most authoritative politicians of the Rima Baškienė party.
The tension between her and R. Karbauskis has been sparking for some time now, which is sometimes especially ignited by Agnė Širinskienė, who has taken on the role of a favorite peasant guide.
R. Baškienė was elected a member of the Seimas for the fifth time for other peasants, and it was sometimes publicly discussed that the work environment in the peasant faction has recently become increasingly complicated. It is said that it changed significantly when A. Širinskienė began to have a great influence on R. Karbauskis: some peasants felt rejected and unnecessary, even ignored, because others were unreasonably exalted.
Therefore, the outcasts, including R.Baškienė, began to want to stay in the corner for another three years and obediently follow the instructions of A.Širinskienė and R.Karbauskis.
Will R.Baškienė, who has not been invited to Babtus, turn her second cheek, or will she finally cut her ties with R.Karbauskis?
The veteran politician is not yet fully open, although some hints made to Lietuvos Rytas suggest that the point in this story is already approaching: “We will say when, if at all, the event will occur. There is a nice and friendly consensus: if our thoughts do not change during the weekend, there will be decisions before the session begins. One or the other of my decisions will also be known before the start of the Seimas session ”.
The cautious parliamentarian stressed that the last word will be given after the weekend of reflection. “R.Baškienė will just wait for that moment very neatly and maybe not run away from the threshold of the civil registry office with a new boyfriend,” the guest peasant joined S.Skvernelis.
On the horizon and a new party
Both S. Svvernelis supporters and other politicians claim that even several MPs can leave the ranks of the Seimas peasants altogether.
It is said that the refugees from the Mixed group of Seimas and the Regions faction can join the new faction, which is supposed to be led by S. Skvernelis and R. Baškienė.
So the peasant faction, which currently has 32 members, can cast up to a couple dozen.
The new faction must be independent and not be too involved with either the opposition or the rulers.
But the latter already sees a potential new sponsor, and S. Skvernel is determined to be one, although he is critical of the government and individual ministers.
The former prime minister, with supporters who had previously considered negotiating with the Social Democrats, now assures that a new party or movement will be formed.
European Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevičius plays an active role here. The politician who harshly criticizes R. Karbauskis is already preparing the ground for his return from Brussels and his political career in Lithuania.
