“Today we must return to the key recommendation that we have known since spring: stay at home,” said the head of government on video.
Morawieckis recommended working remotely to anyone who can.
In Poland, a new record rise of COVID-19 was recorded in the last day, with 8,099 cases confirmed by tests.
The total number of people infected with the coronavirus has risen to 149,903 since the epidemic began in March, of which 3,308 died, authorities said.
The new restrictions will take effect on Saturday in Warsaw and other major cities now included in the “red” zone.
In these areas, all schools will be closed and will transition to distance education.
Restaurants must close at 9 pm local time. Wedding parties will be banned and there will be stricter restrictions on the number of people allowed in shops, public transport and services.
“We will win this fight. However, we will only win it if we evaluate these recommendations, this discipline that we are introducing today, in a caring and responsible way,” said M. Morawieckis.
