On Monday, the chairman of the Social Democratic Party faction, Algirdas Sysas, briefed the chairman of the Seimas Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen.
“The Social Democrats will nominate Julius Sabatauskas as deputies because Gintautas Paluckas himself decided not to participate in the elections,” A. Sysas told the press.
Paluck said he had decided to withdraw his candidacy because he did not have the support of the ruling right.
“Because the question of who will be the vice president of the opposition is decided by the rulers, and I have no support among the rulers. (…) I do not see the need to burn the quota of the Socialist Group for any experiment. I have no personal interest and we will nominate another candidate after discussing in the faction, “he said.
Sys said he did not know whether the Speaker of Parliament would present his candidate for vice president or “peasants” to the Seimas on Tuesday.
The Union of Greens and Peasants of Lithuania proposes Aušrinė Norkienė as vice-president of the Seimas.
V. Čmilytė-Nielsen mentioned that on the Seimas Board, which is made up of the President of Parliament, his deputies and the opposition leader of the Seimas, he would like to see representatives of the three opposition factions.
“It would be a decision by Solomon, but only tomorrow’s votes will show if this will be the case. No one can guarantee that this will be the case, it may be the opposite,” Sys told reporters on Monday.
According to him, a representative of the “peasants” could take over as leader of the Seimas opposition.
On Friday, the conservative Jurgis Razma and the “employee” Andrius Mazuronis were already appointed vice-presidents of the Seimas.
According to the Statute of the Seimas, the head of parliament cannot have more than seven deputies. However, the coalition partners have agreed that there will be six.
