Kaunas Žalgiris, who is preparing for the new Euroleague season 2020–2021, organized an annual press conference, where the team’s financial and playing goals and opportunities were presented.
The Žalgiris director reviewed the team’s affairs Paulius Motiejūnas, provide all official information.
“Speaking through COVID-19, I don’t feel as strong as before, because we had everything counted and arranged, and now everything is not so strong,” said P. Motiejūnas.
The director revealed that the planned budget for last season was 10.6 million euros, and 8.8 million real. The most significant difference is the fall in sponsors’ funds from 3.2 to 1.3 million euros. Here we will have to work more, trying to show the agreed ads when the number of matches decreases.
Revenues from television broadcasts (from 1.2 million euros to 1.1 million euros) and ticket sales (from 3.6 million euros to 3.3 million euros) changed slightly, with slightly more than 1.3 million euros raised by redemptions than last season. . euros.
The distribution of funds for the next season is divided as follows: 7.2 million. 1.2 million euros for the salaries of players and coaches. EUR – for administrative expenses, 1.3 – for other expenses.
Only a part of the fans decided to recover the tickets for the lost games, but this also meant the loss of 807 thousand euros.
“I think it was possible to improve more and more, although I mean not only Žalgiris, but all the clubs in the Euroleague. Player prices and salaries fell less than expected. I don’t want to cause panic or anger, but I imagine that in the event of a second wave, EFTA would be in good shape again and sit down at the table with players and clubs. I would like those scissors to be wider. Contracts have been signed and the contracts do not include any changes in the number of contracts to avoid the arrival of spectators. This has been discussed with the Euroleague, but the treaties do not make sense. We used to plan next year, now we look forward to next week, “said the director of Žalgiris.
It was revealed that last season ended with a negative budget: “Žalgiris” spent 800 thousand euros more than he earned and covered the deficit with funds raised in previous seasons. The budget for the next season is expected to be 9.2 million euros, and the estimated costs are also 500 thousand euros higher than income, so additional money will be sought to cover this difference.
Three different scenarios have been developed for the upcoming season: Scenario A, for a game with limited attendance (~ 7500 spectators), Scenario B completely without spectators, and Scenario C for a completely normal season, although this option seems the least possible.
Žalgiris is also preparing to raise additional funds from its registered (licensed) products, which generated € 150,000 last season, and this figure is expected to increase by another € 240,000 in the next season. A new marketing market has also appeared on the Žalgiris.lt website.
Hackaton and other projects should continue with funding from the Euroleague.
The goals of “Žalgiris” were fixed as usual: triumph in the Lithuanian Basketball League (“Betsafe-LKL”) and the King Mindaugas Cup (KMT). In the Euroleague, meanwhile, a specific, though undisclosed, number of victories has been lifted. It was emphasized that the Euroleague bonus system has also changed, so that the matches won will receive different amounts than the previous ones.
“Previously, the fixed amount was about 50 percent and the rest depended on bonuses. Now the ratio should be 80/20 percent, because we want team budgets to be more stable and less dependent on wins or losses, ”said P. Motiejūnas.
It is also planned to pay more attention to the football branch of Žalgiris, which for the first time won medals in the highest Lithuanian league.
Looking at the game plans for the next season, P. Motiejūnas assured that he trusted the new coaching staff.
“We have to fight and fight with all the opponents. We are armed with patience, we work together and we know that it will take time. We believe that we can beat any rival fighting, but lowering our hands we can also give in to anyone,” said the Lithuanian.
It was also revealed that it has not yet been decided which players will be loaned out, but Žalgiris will once again have more than 12 players. The injury to Patricio Garino also contributed to this. P. Motiejūnas assured that his injury was known before the contract was signed and, after the long rehabilitation, the terms of the contract were adjusted.
“Many of us are jealous that we can already play with the fans, but they are still not completely calm. The Euroleague tournament in Kaunas was organized to show the fans that they can feel safe, ”said the team principal.
Private flights next season will only be for subsequent trips, such as Vitoria, or for two weeks.
