Three workers, a peasant and eight Social Democrats, one of them, Julius Sabatauskas, did not participate in the vote.

“I was away for a short time,” he commented on Delfi Day.

The Seimas member said it had been decided not to obstruct the formation of the government and promised to oppose the rulers when their program was presented.

“The Seimas is not a kindergarten and we will not play sandbox games. We can postpone it. [premjero kandidatūros tvirtinimą] for a week, for two, but we know very well that the results of the elections cannot be changed. For the sake of stability, a new government must be formed, that is why we have decided not to hinder its formation, ”said J. Sabatauskas.

“Once the government’s program is presented and discussed, we will actually strongly oppose it,” he said.

LSDP president Gintautas Paluckas Delfi also claimed that the faction had decided not to support the candidacy.

“The group has decided not to support it. Some did not support abstention, there were some who” voted “standing, but opposition groups do not usually support the ruling candidates for prime minister,” he said.

According to the political scientist Lauras Bielinis, such behavior of the opposition shows that they realize that if not today, the next day the ruling prime minister would be elected.

“For the sake of stability, it was decided to express its position in this way, without reaching the Seimas, without voting at that time and giving the rulers the opportunity to obtain the necessary advantage to approve the prime minister,” the political scientist told Delfi Day.

“In principle, the Social Democrats are not supporters of the ruling party, but in this case we are talking about stability in general and everyone needs it,” he emphasized.

I. Šimonytė’s candidacy for prime minister was nominated by the ruling coalition, which is made up of conservatives, liberals and the Freedom Party. They have 73 of the 141 seats in the Seimas.

As it was not clear until the last minute whether there would be enough votes to approve her candidacy, I. Šimonytė said she was calm at the Seimas regarding any outcome of the vote. Politics again quoted her favorite literary hero, Šveika, as saying that “there will still be something, there has never been a way.”

“My peace of mind will not be disturbed by any of your decisions,” he said.

Once the Seimas approves the candidacy of the Prime Minister and the President appoints him, the Prime Minister, no later than within 15 days after his appointment, will present to the Seimas the Government formed by him and approved by the President, submit to consideration of the program of this Government.
