One hundred police officers, forensic scientists and prosecutors searched the branches of the US-Israeli-Lithuanian joint venture “Fertility Clinic” that provides fertilization and gynecology services in Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipeda. The houses and cars of the company’s executives and employees were also searched.
“It is suspected that the income was hidden in the medical institution, the unaccounted amount, according to preliminary data, may amount to around one million euros,” says Dalia Pocienė, Chief Prosecutor of the Klaipėda Regional Prosecutor’s Office.

Officials also suspect company employees are fraudulently keeping accounts and abusing the service.
“During the search, almost half a million cash was seized, as well as documents, objects and computer equipment relevant to the investigation,” says D. Pocienė.
At present, 12 employees of the Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipėda Fertility Clinic have been suspected, 9 of them have been arrested and detained.
“The detainees are both the director of the company and the managers and people responsible for financial affairs, accounting,” says Raimondas Vaitkevičius, deputy director of the Commissariat.
TV3 News sources confirmed that one of the detainees is Algirdas Usonis, director of the Fertility Clinic, and Audronė Usonienė, husband of Algirdas Brazauskas’s daughter. Usonienė, who works as a midwife and gynecologist at the Fertility Clinic, declined to communicate with reporters.
“I tell you, I won’t say anything,” said Audronė Usonienė, an employee of the Fertility Clinic.
Police suspect that company executives have instructed clinic staff not to count patient income. To the extent that this may have continued, officials did not reveal that this could jeopardize the investigation. But it is already clear where this money was going.
“According to our data, the owners and managers of the company appropriated the money and wages that were paid,” says R. Vaitkevičius.
In the near future, law enforcement officers will decide whether to arrest the suspects, as they have been detained for only 48 hours so far. As the pre-trial investigation is carried out under parts of three articles of the Penal Code, suspects face different responsibilities. The maximum expected: 8 years in prison.
