The Party Monitoring Committee will decide on Friday how to deal with an unprecedented situation.

The chairman of this committee, Valdas Benkunskas, told BNS that he would propose that the TS-LKD council approve G. Landsbergis as party chairman for another four years.

“It is obvious that the will of the party members has been expressed, that G. Landsbergis has the confidence and support of the party branches, in this case it no longer makes sense to continue with the electoral procedures,” he said.

Celtic candidates from 15 sections signed a blanket refusal to run in this party president election. They base such decision on a special pandemic situation, which requires concentration and joint work in the Seimas and the Government, the BNS informed the party.

“In this difficult period, understanding the confidence of the Lithuanian people in our electoral program and trying to justify that confidence, we refuse to stand for the election of the TS-LKD president and invite ourselves to focus on important works for Lithuania,” said his letter.

Most of the TS-LKD divisions nominated the current leader, Foreign Minister G. Landsbergis, and she was nominated 72 times.

Members of Seimas Paulius Saudargas (31 proposals), Laurynas Kasčiūnas (28), Radvilė Morkūnaitė-Mikulėnienė (12), Gintarė Skaistė (5), Žygimantas Pavilionis (3), Jurgita Šiugždinienė (3), Arvydas Anušauskronius (2) were also Audience. Ažubalis (2), Monika Navickienė (2), once the candidacies of the Deputy Mayor of the capital Valdas Benkunskas, former MEP Irena Degutienė, MEP Rasa Juknevičienė, members of Seimas Mykolas Majauskas and Kazys Starkevičius and the Allanga Šarūnas Vaitkus.

The vice president of the Seimas P. Saudargas stated that he had offered to all the applicants, except G. Landsbergis, to sign a resignation so that the work at the Seimas would not be hampered by internal competition, because “the internal discussion in quarantine would not be wide neither deep, and at the same time significant. “

“And now, not competition within the party, but working here and now for the benefit of Lithuania in the Seimas and the Government, both to get rid of the pandemic and reduce its consequences, and to defend the values and security of our community, is a priority of the party, “he said.

According to the procedure for the election of the president of the TS-LKD, in the case of a situation where only one candidate for president is present and approved, the decision on the subsequent course of the election will be proposed by the TS- LKD. Surveillance committee and approved by the party council.

Previously, the Conservatives planned for the Conservative leader to be elected in so-called open elections, when not only party members but also their supporters who registered for the elections have the right to vote.

The first round of elections for the party president is scheduled for March 27 and 28 and, if necessary, the second for April 25 and 25.

G. Landsbergis has led TS-LKD since 2015.

In 2017, 5,539 party members or 62.4 percent voted for him in direct elections.
