Decorations do not lack imagination
At the end of the project “Light up Christmas on the balcony” initiated by photographer Adas Vasiliauskas together with Go Vilnius and the municipality of the capital, both the balconies on the upper floors of the apartment buildings and the festively bright terraces of various corners from Vilnius, starting with Pašilaičiai, Perkūnkiemis, ending with Antakalnis, Naujami
To lift spirits and inspire hope in a difficult time, people built giant lollipops, ornamental wreaths, and Santa Claus carrying gifts on the cabin windows and balconies. Unimaginative Vilnius residents used unnecessary clothes hangers, leftover cables from work and even a bicycle waiting for spring on the balcony to create decorations.

For example, Marius, who lives in Naujamiestis, and his son placed a meditating figure on the balcony next to a decorated Christmas tree, inviting them to wait for the holidays to gather. “Now we are meditating on our Christmas tree so that there is more happiness than light bulbs,” the Vilnius resident overcame the holiday wishes, stating that the contest became an incentive to implement the much-cherished idea of festively decorating the balcony.

Robert “filled” the balcony of Antakalnis with a large ribbon and placed a glowing angel on it. “This year is not only a symbol of peace, happiness, but also a symbol of great hope,” said the author. – I hope that after opening the windows in this dark period, the neighbors will rejoice in the beautiful light, the new day, they will see the Angel with good news. This Christmas is extraordinary because it has allowed us to understand who we are. We need each other, and it doesn’t matter how similar or different we are. “

It attracted the interest of Spanish, Portuguese and Japanese
More than seventy Vilnius residents responded to the invitation to decorate balconies and participate in the project announced in early December. Installations created by Jolita Vaitkutė and other artists featured during the project’s inception also inspired residents of other cities; the project organizers also received photos from Kaunas and Klaipėda. The 33 most interesting balconies were selected for the second phase of the project. The latter were visited by the photographer’s drone and the photos were published on the project website kaledosbalkonuose.lt.
The “Light Christmas on the Balcony” project has received a lot of attention from foreign media. One of the largest Portuguese news portals, Publico, wrote about the Vilnius-born idea: “In Vilnius, Christmas does not fit in at home and takes root on the balconies. In the Lithuanian capital a great idea was born: to invite residents to decorate balconies and windows so that Christmas in every home would become visible ”.

Sharing photos of the project, the Spanish photography portal Xataka Foto pointed out: “Aerial photographs show that the exteriors of many Lithuanian townhouses have been turned into canvases that spread the Christmas spirit and are safe but at the same time innovative, helping to connect with the neighbors”.
“In the calm atmosphere of Vilnius, the original balconies shine even more,” wrote Saginomiya Yayoi, author of the Japanese portal Pouch. The country’s news portals Mixi, Biglobe, Excite and others also wrote about the project.
