In Belarus itself, Independence Day on March 25 is not officially celebrated. On this day, the Belarusian Democratic Republic was proclaimed in 1918, but it existed until early 1919, when the Bolsheviks took power in the country.
The Aliaksandr Lukashenko regime prohibits the celebration of this day in Belarus, does not recognize it, since July 3 is the day of the independence of Belarus, when in 1944 the Nazi German army withdrew from Minsk and was occupied by the army Soviet.
In the morning, Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Cichanouskaya met with President Gitan Nauseda, Foreign Minister Gabriel Landsbergis and paid tribute to Belarusian freedom fighters at the Race cemetery in Vilnius.
On the eve of Freedom Day, the Belarusian European Humanities University in Vilnius called on the international community to show solidarity with those who had been violent, arrested, convicted and are currently detained in Belarus during peaceful protests. Various actions and demonstrations are also planned in Belarus.
“It is time for us to return to the streets and continue fighting against the regime that has turned our country into a prison,” Cichanouskaya said in a comment to BNS.
