Shock on the day of the funeral

Lina Jackevičienė from Panevėžys is experiencing the loss of her father very painfully. It is difficult for a woman to talk about it not only because of the death of a loved one, but also because of the horrible inconveniences during the funeral.

“The day I had to cry, support my mother and accompany my father on my last trip, I sat on needles and thought about what to do. They have already explained to me that in cases like ours, the deceased is transported back from the grave to the fridge and then cremated. I was firmly determined: I will definitely no longer take my father to the morgue in front of everyone, ”L. Jackevičienė continues to offend.

Her father died on May 3, after the illness. On May 5, he was fed at the Grauduva Funeral Home, and just a couple of hours later, his daughter was informed of the problem with the diggers. Although the five-person cemetery dates from 1973, only one person was buried, without reaching the required depth of 2m in the semi-empty tomb, as strictly required by the Burial of Human Bodies Act and the Municipal Rules, the water began to seep from the ground and dig a freshly dug well. No permit is issued for his burial in said cemetery.

Mystical map

L. Jackevičienė soon discovered that such obstacles in his family “Grauduvai” cemetery are not new: the company has a map showing such areas flooded with groundwater in the cemetery. Only the customer says they found out about it the last time. The news also changed for her, which states that the coffin must be buried at least 2m away. depth.

“The most interesting thing is that in 2017. I have received an official notification that I am the owner of that cemetery and I have been assigned the responsibility of its administration. But that the rules have changed, nobody could report it by letter or at least by message , even though we have the contacts of our owners. Leave the car out of place, you will immediately find a thin leaf and no one will get so tired of the cemetery, “Panevėžys was angry.

Dug two wells

On the day of her father’s funeral, Lina felt completely stagnant.

“I am not sitting next to the coffin, but with the funeral home staff we are thinking about what to do. The water cannot be pumped, it accumulates again. I understand that it is not possible to negotiate with the cemetery administrator who issues the funeral permits, the so-called king of the iron hut. There are rumors that he is not ashamed to access the ruler to measure the depth of the well during the funeral, “says Lina.

In the closing hours of the funeral, just before the coffin was brought in, an offer was made to dig a second well in the same cemetery and drain and bury it as soon as possible before water accumulated.

“I paid for two pits of 190 euros each. Admittedly, it was only after a harsher tone that I demanded a bill for the second. Excavators are already working on the kibo funeral procession as they move toward the cemetery. warned the prayers, only after lowering the coffin ”, L. Jackevičienė remembers the accelerated and macabre end of the funeral.

However, according to her, this is not the end: one day it will be necessary to rethink the last journey of a mother who will not want to stay somewhere else forever.

“Shortly after my father’s funeral, I told him about my concerns and was already getting used to my mother’s cremation idea. Mom doesn’t want that. But if this happens to us, there’s nothing left: they make up laws that are practically inadequate for old cemeteries ”, worries Panevėžys.

Underground: both water and bricks

According to Aušra Bertulienė, director of the Grauduva company, 20–25 cemeteries in the Ramygalos Street Cemetery fall into the groundwater danger zone. These places are marked in the plan issued by the municipality of Panevėžys in February. The funeral director defends that he is shown to the client at the first meeting.

“The cemeteries near Staniūnai have been flooded for several years. It all started with a rainy summer. After that, the drainage system probably failed and the Municipality has no money to fix it. Unable to dig the excavations, such graves are already filled with water. There is a danger that it can be washed, turning adjacent coffins. We warn people with the first sentence that this can happen, some demand it, others do not, “says A. Bertulienė.

According to her, some choose other graves, others cremate the deceased, because the urn can be buried at a depth of 1 m.

“Some categorically want to bury their families in the cemetery, so they later face problems,” says the director.

Part of the tombstone obstacle map also falls in the area where construction debris was once contained. Here, when digging excavators, the shovels rest on bricks.

In some of the old cemeteries, the old tombs also have difficulty reaching 2 meters. Although burial in an old cemetery is allowed 25 years after the last burial, old coffins were often buried to a depth of 1.60 to 1.70m and their remains now prevent the new coffin from being lowered deeper.

Although Grauduva’s boss claims that clients are warned about all of these obstacles, he admits that they often have to save the funeral at the last minute.

Must suck

Laura Jankevičienė, a specialist at the Municipal City Infrastructure Department, informed Sekundė that an administrative meeting with companies providing ritual services took place in February.

Companies were reminded of the requirements set out in the Cemetery Management Rules of the Republic of Lithuania and the Cemetery Management Rules in the city of Panevėžys when digging a grave where human remains are buried. The managers of the companies were asked to make sure that the grave to bury the human remains was dry and tidy, and that the depth was not less than 2 meters, “explained the specialist.

According to L. Jankevičienė, if water appears in the pit, the funeral organizers should pump it before lowering the coffin.

According to the specialist, cemetery administrators were also told that when issuing burial permits, they should warn residents about the problem areas in the lower cemeteries of Šilaičiai and Christ the King and offer another burial place or ensure that the depth The grave where the human remains will be buried is not less than 2 meters.

According to L. Jankevičienė, the workplace of the supervisors of the Panevėžys cemetery is responsible for their workplace: “Panevėžys special motor transport” and complaints must be submitted to this company.

Drainage is irrational.

Currently, the municipality of Panevėžys pays the greatest attention to the development of the new Pašiliai cemetery. According to Darius Linkonas, Deputy Head of the City’s Infrastructure Department, half of the newly assigned area has been occupied in two years, and it would be unreasonable to think of draining a couple of dozen of the oldest graves in the Cristo Rey cemetery. Preparations are also underway for the construction of a new columbarium with approximately 600 seats.

„Ramygalos str. Drainage project. According to 2015 calculations, the cemetery cost 0.5 million. euros Now the cost of such an idea would be perhaps a whole million. So is it better to focus on developing new cemeteries, because soon there will be no burial, or invest money where twenty family cemeteries are flooded? “The deputy asked rhetorically.
