On the Facebook group “Reidas Vilnius”, a driver posted a photo showing how
the mobile speedometer is built directly behind the billboard and oriented to take pictures of passing drivers.
“And it’s called ‘defend, protect, help,'” replied the author of the photo, and comments were posted after him that officials should be ashamed to hide the speedometer in this way.
Nobody bothers
However, officials do not appear to feel public embarrassment. In a letter to Delfi’s editorial office, the Lithuanian Highway Police Service (LKPT) emphasizes that officers can and do apply public, private or mixed patrol methods when performing speed control with mobile speed measuring devices.
“Police officers must observe and take the necessary precautions not to endanger road safety. The device captured in the photo shown does not seem to bother road users, it does not endanger traffic safety, it works during the day, it does not show that works are being carried out on the road or that the permitted driving speed is limited ”, indicates the letter sent.
As LKPT officials emphasized, on the one hand, meters are used on accidental and dangerous road sections where the probability of speeding accidents is higher, on the other hand, drivers must know and follow the Traffic Rules .
