“My wife surprised me, she gave me a trip, she said a few days before the trip and I would not have been able to do it physically, because the board does not meet every week or every day, so after leaving the application it is probably it makes no sense to write to LRT radio, “V. Ąžuolas told LRT radio.
The politician emphasizes that he is not the first or the last member of the Seimas to go abroad without the permission of the Seimas Board. He thinks his decision to go to Egypt during the Seimas spring session is a “bubble”.
“Only in my case is such a big bubble inflated in the face of accusations of violating the Constitution or breaking the oath, and in another case, when another member of the Seimas leaves, nobody gets stuck or even notices it,” said the parliamentarian.
V. Ąžuolas is also convinced that his trip to Egypt cannot be considered a break, because he claims to have participated in the meetings of the working groups and committees of the Seimas.
“Currently, it is allowed to work remotely, so I worked remotely in many working groups and committee meetings. Of course, I did not have the opportunity to work on Wednesday, when there was a session of the Seimas, but at that time there were not 20 members of the Seimas ”, said the member of the Seimas.
“Among them, for example, Gabriel Landsbergis didn’t work out either.
Consequently, I am as offended as Landsbergis for not being present at the session that day, ”he added, acknowledging that he did not ask for the opportunity to participate in the Seimas sitting remotely while visiting Egypt.
The MP also emphasizes that a member of the Seimas is also a person with a family and children. According to him, the situation would become clearer and simpler if the parliamentarian had the right to withdraw.
“A Seimas member is also a person who has a family and children. It is probably an integral part of this as well. And if the leave of a Seimas member is decided, the possibility that a Seimas member will receive disability benefit. , the possibility of a member of the Seimas taking parental leave, these problems would probably not even arise and should not even be discussed, ”said the MP.
However, V. Ąžuolas admits that in the future, even a few days before traveling abroad, the Seimas Board should be informed.
ELTA recalls that the President of Parliament, Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, appealed to the Seimas Ethics and Procedures Commission to find out if V. Ąžuoklas, a “peasant” who went to Egypt during the session and did not inform the Parliamentary Board about it. , did not violate the statute.
