“In the cinema, I like the feeling when words feel empty after the movie. When you watch a movie, you try to retell it in words, and it’s not enough, because it’s something else. There is a lot of talk in this movie , but if there is something left to see when there are not enough words, then we will have succeeded, “said Karolis Kaupinis, director and screenwriter of Nova Lithuania, during the presentation of the film.
Nova Lithuania moves to Kaunas in 1938: the country celebrates 20 years of independence and the threat of war shines in Europe. Feliksas Gruodis, a geography teacher, worries about the future of the state and comes up with a crazy plan. He proposes to the Government to create a backup copy of Lithuania on the African continent: the country’s population could move here. The prototype of the teacher depicted in the film is Kazys Pakštas, a geographer and scientist who became famous for the idea of a Lithuanian reservation during the interwar period. But it is not a historical film, it is a history that could have been.
Impressions from the red carpet guests – in the video:
Although many of the professor’s ideas are considered crazy and hysterical, the only person in the film who trusts him is the politician Jonas Servus, the country’s somewhat disappointed prime minister. Finally, the Prime Minister is already calculating how many ships Lithuanians would need to travel to Africa: “2 million 800 thousand people. Let’s say a ship can hold 500 people. Then we will need 5600 ships. Let’s say the trip takes a week forward and a week ago. It will take over four years here to raise the whole of Lithuania! ”
At the movie’s premiere, organizers also tried to draw the government’s attention to exclusive cinema regulation after the end of the quarantine. Next to the red carpet was a stand with the inscription “Don’t discriminate in theaters. In a disco, the bus may be without a mask, and in a cinema, no. We feel responsible, but we want equal rights.” “We would very much like to have clear and equal rules of the game, so we support theaters by helping them ask questions that have yet to be answered by the government,” says Nova Lituania producer Marija Razgutė.
The film “Nova Lithuania” was recognized as the best film at the Athens and Riga film festivals, won a special Cineuropa award at the Vilnius Film Festival “Kino pavasaris”, and director Karolis Kaupinis was named best director at the goEast film festival in Germany. The film features Aleksas Kazanavičius, Vaidotas Martinaitis, Valentinas Masalskis, Rasa Samuolytė, Eglė Gabrėnaitė. AD Nova Lithuania.
The production of the film was partly funded by the Lithuanian Film Center under the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania. The film is produced by Marija Razgutė (M-films).
