On Thursday, the representative of the Eugenijus Jovaiša faction and the president of LVŽS, the prime minister of the shadow government, Ramūnas Karbauskis, held a press conference at the Seimas “Systemic changes in the evaluation of general education. What does LVŽS offer? “

According to the party president, education issues are currently a priority.

“The issue of education is probably the most relevant in Lithuania today. The fact that all political parties have signed an agreement on the future of education is an indicator that we all understand that education and the success of Lithuania they are the most related things, ”said R. Karbauskis.

The Minister of Education, Science and Sports of the shadow Government, E. Jovaiša, in turn explained that the assessment of the maturity of current students is not adequate, so he proposes changes.

“We forgot to assess maturity, we forgot to follow individual human achievements for 12 years. <...> We forget to motivate our students for systematic and continuous work, without further judging their achievements in terms of expressions on average. We have forgotten that our children also mature in non-formal education, ”said E. Jovaiša.

According to him, the new evaluation system proposed by LVŽS is based on several basic principles.

“First of all, we want to decouple the maturity assessment from admission to a higher education institution, and admission to a higher education institution must follow the rules and criteria established by the higher education institution itself.

Another principle is the universality of evaluation: we value both formal and non-formal education.

The third thing is that for reasons of motivation and for other important things we will evaluate the averages. It is estimated that the highest degree of maturity of the student is 100 points. At the moment, we believe that 60 points would be enough to show maturity, ”said E. Jovaiša.

According to him, five exams would be compulsory: “Lithuanian language – 10 percent, mathematics – 10, foreign language – 10, civic maturity – 10, natural sciences – 10”.

According to the LVŽS representative, obtaining a maturity certificate would require a total of four things: maturity exams, grade point averages, final maturity work, and skills acquired during non-formal education.

“The question is, when should we start averaging? At the moment, we propose to count from the eighth grade so that students and parents can have plenty of time to get used to the new system and, most importantly, the student assessment system may change during the life of the law.

The thesis is already in our general education system; unfortunately, it is not that popular. I’m afraid we’ll find one percent of writers. It should show the maturity, inclinations and individual competencies of the student and show the inclination of the personality towards one activity or another.

This final work could become a cover letter when entering higher education institutions in the future ”, considered E. Jovaiša.

“In parallel, and perhaps before, higher education institutions should have the right to admit their students according to established procedures. Many of these maturity elements could serve for what it would like to take from a higher education institution,” he added .

According to E. Jovaiša, the role of non-formal education is especially important.

“The certificate must have a special appendix, which must list the most important achievements of the young person or young person in non-formal education: be it sports, Olympics of subjects or graduation. There are many ways to account for this, either establishing a certain number of hours to spend or deducting qualitatively, “he said.

Remove part of the burden and graduates

The first of these changes could take effect from 2027.

“Six years should be the period during which we can prepare for this change. The most important thing is how to make a correct and objective knowledge assessment system so that those assessments are more uniform throughout Lithuania,” said the academic.

R. Karbauskis, for his part, said these changes would take much of the burden off the shoulders of 12th graders.

“The dissociation of the maturity exams from the admission to higher education would allow to remove the current tension in the 12th grade, when all the 12th grade becomes the preparation for the exams, and it is up to them whether the child will be admitted to the high school or not, “said R. Karbauskis.
