“We are still negotiating the permits and have not officially announced it yet. The municipality is very busy and waiting for the situation to develop,” said Lukas Stravinskas, president of the Liberal Youth of Lithuania.
The organization’s president said they would like to hold the event on September 10, at 10 am, “at the same time that the” protesters “plan to move towards the Seimas.”
“It just came to our knowledge then. At first we thought about meeting at the Mažvydas Library (near the Seimas -” Delfi “) until they reached the Cathedral Square, and then just getting out of there. Just to show that there is another side.
But the municipality told us that “we will definitely not give them permission for Mažvydas, because they will still be there everywhere.” This is what we plan to elect for the Presidency, “explained L. Stravinskas.
He said the event was intended to uphold the rule of law and democracy.
“That we are not against something, as they are against vaccines, passports of opportunity, etc., we are in favor of the rule of law and democracy. We want to show that we do not support what ended with the events of August 10, “said L. Stravinskas.
The seat in the Presidency, according to one of the initiators of the campaign, was chosen to draw attention to the fact that they were not satisfied with the reaction of the head of state Gitan Nausėda to the events of August 10.
“It just came to our notice then. In fact, there was a Facebook log written a day and a half later. Still, those people seem to value the president more than the government, the president would probably listen more, and the fact that he could only writing a Facebook post after a day and a half in response to those events is certainly not a situation that we think is appropriate, “said L. Stravinskas.
The head of the organization explained that the Liberal Youth of Lithuania is a non-partisan youth organization that advocates for liberal values and ideas and strives to spread them among the youth.
Suspended permits for demonstrations
As already announced, the Vilnius City Municipality is reviewing all previously agreed permits for public events. As announced by the municipality, all applications will be reviewed in consultation with the police and other authorities.
The decision was made after a rally near the Seimas in the evening turned into a riot.
About 5,000. People had gathered at an authorized rally near the Seimas in Vilnius to protest against planned government restrictions on people who do not have immunity to the coronavirus and are not getting tested.
After the Seimas session, some of the protesters blocked the exits of the parliamentary building and the exit of the inner courtyard of the Seimas. When they were taken from the building by officers, riots broke out: bottles were thrown at officers, flares were fired and tear gas was used at protesters. Fifteen officers were injured in the incident.
