Delphi the photographer captured what Vilnius Cathedral Square looked like on New Year’s Eve.
The number of people here was incomparably less than usual on New Years Eve. The Christmas tree was out, there were many officers in the square, but some still decided to come and look around. There were people who came with families. Some even brought alcoholic drinks and glasses. And right here in the square he started having a few drinks. The officials disciplined them and asked them to leave.
There were also elderly people in the square who belong to the risk group. Also, not all of them met the requirement to wear face masks. The photographer recorded that a person was detained by police officers.
It is true that not everyone gathered in the square. Others stood at their entrances, where they drank drinks and watched fireworks. The sky fired fireworks, although the municipality did not allow them. The people who brought them set off fireworks.
Apparently there were also drunk people at the entrances to the square who were making noise.
The municipality urged to stay home
Although a celebration of hundreds of Vilnius residents and guests took place in the Cathedral Square, which was previously popular for New Year’s Eve, this year the capital called for a safe and responsible celebration, watching broadcasts of festive concerts and taking tours. virtual by Vilnius.
“The stricter quarantine conditions are temporary. With the first vaccines, a new phase is already beginning for all of us: the beginning of the end of the virus. And so far the Municipality is sending a clear message to the public – during the New Year we do not plan to go to the Cathedral or City Hall squares, where nothing will happen, let’s leave the fireworks – spectators drawing crowds to stabilize the situation as soon as possible, come out of quarantine, – said Edita Tamošiūnaitė, deputy mayor of Vilnius , before the New Year.
To avoid gatherings, on New Year’s Eve, the Vilnius City Council decided to restrict movement around the Cathedral Square, abandoned the New Year’s fireworks and extinguished the fir trees in the Cathedral and City Hall squares and surrounded them .
On New Year’s Eve, parking was prohibited in the streets near the Cathedral Square, except for residents and people with parking permits. December 31 and January 1. Parking is prohibited on T. Vrublevskio, Šventaragio, Tilto, Barbora Radvilaitė and Maironis streets. As of December 31. 10:30 p.m. to 2021 January 1 1:30 in the afternoon. Traffic and public transport are also prohibited on these streets.
“It was decided to physically enclose the fir tree and give up the New Year’s fireworks for everyone’s safety, saving the doctors and taking care to save as many lives as possible. We all want the strictest restrictions to end as soon as possible, they are not enjoyable for anyone, but they are necessary. We invite you to stay home during this critical period, watch the spruce live stream on the internet and look forward to a better time in 2021, “said Vilnius Deputy Mayor E. Tamošiūnaitė on applicable solutions.
On New Year’s Eve, population flows in Cathedral Square and other public spaces were monitored by reinforced police forces, city law enforcement officers and shooters, as well as drones for help. Citizens are warned by officials about the quarantine rules and fined 500-1500 for non-compliance.
Other Lithuanian municipalities imposed similar restrictions on New Year’s Eve.
Several thousand people gathered during the ignition.
Delfi recalls that on November 28, when the Christmas tree was lit in Vilnius Cathedral Square, many people gathered who ignored the quarantine requirements and calls from the municipality to stay home.
Although the representatives of the Municipality urged not to vote, not all followed these recommendations when lighting the fir. About 20 minutes to 6 pm, a traffic jam formed on Šventaragio Street, and more and more people flocked to the Cathedral Square.
One part stayed away from the main mass, watching the firing of the spruce from a distance of several hundred meters, the part waiting for the solemn moment while standing shoulder to shoulder. Although the municipality warned that officers and volunteers would be on guard near the Cathedral Square, who should have warned people not to gather if necessary, the Delfi journalists did not notice anything similar. It is likely that the lighting of a fir tree was seen live in the Cathedral Square by about two thousand people.
However, there was nothing like it during Christmas and Christmas. Far fewer people gathered near the city’s main Christmas tree.
