Norway announced Wednesday that it will open its borders to nearly all non-residents on Thursday to prevent the spread of a new Ukrainian strain of coronavirus.

From midnight, Thursday to Friday, Norway will carry the strictest rules from March 12, 2020, Prime Minister Erna Solberg said at a press conference.

In practice, borders will be drawn for all those who do not live in Norway, he said.

The prime minister says there will be various exemptions, such as for healthcare workers coming from Sweden and Finland, and for companies transporting goods.

The exceptions also apply to energy and defense workers, as well as foreign journalists.

However, the restriction will apply to international athletes, although Norway is preparing for international skiing in the coming weeks.
