“For too long, cannabis prohibition has been disproportionately imposed on non-white communities, with severe prison terms,” Cuomo said in a statement.
“This important law guarantees justice for long-excluded communities, recognizes a new industry that will help the economy grow, and establishes strong safeguards for society,” the governor said.

Under the law, people over the age of 21 will be able to buy cannabis and grow it for personal use at home, with part of the proceeds expected to be used for drug information and treatment.
New York State will automatically revoke people’s previous convictions for marijuana offenses that are no longer considered offenses under the new law.
Penalties for possession of this drug up to 85 g will also be abolished, and the current medical marijuana program will be expanded.

The law came at a time when Mr. Cuomo was threatened with an investigation into his alleged sexual harassment and intimidation of female workers, as well as allegations that his administration had covered up COVID-19-related deaths in the homes of seniors.
