Recreation and active leisure – close to home
One of the first changes will take place in a small green area currently used by the community, at the intersection of Giedraičių-Kraków streets, called Dragon Meadow. The project for this space has already been prepared and received a building permit. The next stages of project implementation are expected to go smoothly and residents will be able to visit the new plaza by the end of next year.
During project preparation, the architects, in cooperation with the active community of Šnipiškės, decided that the place, currently used as a small event and children’s play area, will be adapted to the needs of local residents and will be purposefully divided in a recreation area, playground for children and active leisure (basketball, soccer). and training grounds), writes the press release of SĮ “Flat Vilniaus”.

The renovation of the Šnipiškės district aims to give residents the opportunity to meet, communicate and actively spend their free time safely and close to home. The planned playground will be fenced in for security with an openwork fence, and the basketball and soccer field will also be partially fenced to prevent the ball from entering the street or private space. The goal of the project was to preserve as many mature trees as possible, which should be followed by a gazebo, chess tables and a quieter recreation area. As the neighbors call the square “Pradera del Dragón”, the project tried to preserve part of the natural meadow without losing the name of the space. The authors warn with laughter that even in the plane of the winding paths of the square you can see the silhouette of a dragon.
“We are working hard so that the residents of the Šnipiškės district have more places to relax from the hustle and bustle of the city, so we have planned not only the preservation of old trees, but also the additional planting of greenery.” The project envisages that the newly planted trees along Kraków Street will cover the facade of the adjacent parking lot and create a shadow on the meadow.
After consulting with the community, it was decided to frame the water column in the area, thus highlighting the recurring element that is important to residents and found in all Šnipiškės and integrating it into the common space. The project also proposes to place part of the historic Šilutės street with a natural stone pavement, which in the future could be extended throughout the entire Šilutės street. On the street, already at the autumn festival this year, the residents were symbolically traveling in a carriage, so it is very important for the designers, as well as for the community, to preserve the character of the place.
There are no garages in Šnipiškės, but parks and squares
In the other part of Šnipiškės, after the construction of the 80-acre garages between Giedraičių and Kintų streets, another project is being completed, which provides for the installation of the main space, called “Šnipiškių aikštė” by the locals. The newly created space is expected to become a central venue for community events, as all events have so far taken place in the smaller Dragon Meadow. According to the authors of the project, part of the territory can be used for exhibitions, fairs or other commerce.
The territory is functionally organized in a circle, around the central space-plaza, whose entrances provide areas for various activities. In consultation with the local community and after adjustments to the project, individual small green areas were abandoned and it was decided to merge into larger meadows.

Renewable valley of Neris Senvagė
In the near future, Vilnius residents will be able to enjoy another example of the synthesis of preserved nature and convenient infrastructure of the city – the Senvagė bicycle and pedestrian route from Neris to PC Ozas. In the Senvagė del Neris valley, between the formed lakes, a cozy space will appear, harmoniously connecting the adjacent areas with the banks of the Neris river. The designers of SĮ Vilniaus planas took into account the existing nature of Šnipiškės and in the project tried to reveal the uniqueness of this place.
In addition to the hiking and biking trails that wind between the chain’s lakes, there are playgrounds, basketball and outdoor exercise courts, and a training ground for dogs. There are viewing spots to explore the Senvagė landscape, which was formed during the ice age, and relaxation will be possible on the wooden decks right on the water.
